Donald's Story
I am now retired and have been since age sixty when I discovered that work is the curse of the leisure class.
As many of you have probably discovered, retirement is a relative term these days. I am Chairman of a srart-up fabless semiconductor company, coincidently in Pittsburgh; a Trustee of my condominium association; and occasionally do some consulting. MIT, which is a beautiful 25 minute walk from my house, has an extensive range of alumni programs of which I take full advantage.
Glenda and I have moved from our five acres in suburban Boston to a condo in the heart of the city. We now use the car about once a week. We walk everywhere to enjoy the vibrancy of this truly wonderful city.
Due to annual lessons in Taos NM, I ski better than ever, particularly in bumps and powder. If you have ever thought about taking up skiing it's not too late...although you should consider heroin first, it's cheaper and less addictive.
We have continued to travel extensively. In January '07, we celebrated Glenda's birthday drinking Champagne atop a tower in Rathambur India while being serenaded by a sitar player. Rathambur, where we spent four days searching for tigers in the preserve, was the last stop on our epic tour of nor...Expand for more
thern India. We bicycled through Rajastan, and toured Delhi, Veranasee and Agra, where our hotel room had a view of the Taj Mahal.
Veranasee, the holy city of Hinduism, was probably our favorite of the many places we visited. There you see the real tumult that is India: bathers in the Ganges, cattle in the streets, funeral pyres on the ghats, the bright colors of the clothing and the markets and the children. There are children everywhere, bright eyed and full of energy and curiosity.
At the conclusion of my career, worked in Europe for eight years as CEO of Andover Controls European operations. I was based the UK Midlands and saw quite a bit of Germany, France and Poland were we had operations. We had independent distributors in most other countries so I got around quite a bit.
Glenda and I have managed a number of bicyling trips in Europe including several in France, as well as Spain, Portugal,Italy,Germany,Austria and the Czech Republic. Cycling inn-to-inn is a wonderful way to see a country and I have never encountered anything other than a warm welcome while cycling.
I have also skied in France and Italy but prefer the Rockies for their superior conditions and relative lack of lift lines and trail crowding.
