Donald's Story

After spending 13 years in college earning a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics, I worked for the former McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company in St. Louis, Mo; National Semiconductor Corp. in Santa Clara, CA; and Hewlett Packard, Inc. in Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, CA and Fort Collins, CO. Except for my stint at McDonnell Douglas where I did nothing of value, I spent my career inventing processes for making computer and cell phone chips. Some of my inventions received patents, and others were too weird and proprietary to disclose. I also authored many technical articles and served on the BOD and chaired several committees on one of my technical societies, the AVS. My total career spanned 26 years. I thought that a 2:1 ratio of career to education seemed about right. Since my retirement in early 1998, I have tried to give back. I am currently a founder, past president and member of a group of distinguished physics alumni at the University of MO who support the Physics Department and its students. I am also a member of the MU College of A&S Strategic Development Board helping the Dean in his efforts to clone the Physics Alumni Support group in his other departments. I have received an honorary Professional Degree of P...Expand for more
hysics from Missouri U of Science and Technology and a MU College of A&S Distinguished Alumni Award. Lona and I have season tickets to Opera San Jose and belong to the Opera Guild which supports opera in the San Jose area. We also attend ballet, symphony, and theater, and frequently go to the Art Museum. We like to spend our vacations hiking and camping in the wilderness. I am a very serious photographer of what we see there. If you would like to view some of my pictures see my website. Classmates won't let me include a link, so you will have to Google "dlpackwood" to find it. I spend about 15 hours a week in exercise to stay fit and ward off the ravages of old age. This, of course, includes golf and all-day hiking with Lona. Until the meniscus of both knees gave out 4 years ago, I was a competitive runner. You can see some of my race times if you Google "Donald Packwood". Now I race walk, bicycle, and lift weights. Update 04-05-10: After three years of not running at all, my knees did not hurt, so I tried running again. I found it did not bother my knees. Don't believe it when they say your meniscus will not heal. Mine did. I am running an racing at my running club again. My times are pathetic, but improving.
