Donna's Story

6/13: Updated information: I am still working as a Speech Pathologist in the Berlin School District, NH. My husband, Ed, just stopped shipping out with the Merchant Marine to take a land job with the Gorham NH paper mill as a maintenance supervisor (same type of job he did with the Gilman paper mill years ago) but the mill's viability is variable at the moment so he may ship out again if the mill cannot sustain itself. My son is 20 and is attending the University of Maine at Orono (my alma mater). He will be a Junior next year (has enough credits to hopefully graduate a semester early) and he is double majoring in Business and Communications. He is running his own business (managing a paint crew) and learning all aspects of running his own business. He is finding out that there are a lot of ups and downs with this endeavor but it is a great learning experience that hopefully will help him in his job search after college. He continues to be involved with leadership and government activities at U Maine. Lancaster, NH is a beautiful town in the beautiful White Mountains but I am longing to be closer to my family in the Portland area. Who knows now what the future holds. After graduating from UMO in 1980, I took off for Jackson Hole, Wyoming for two fun exciting years. I returned to Greenville, Maine (1982) to start my career as a Speech Pathologist. I had exciting times there being a Ski Patrol for Squaw Mountain and a White Water Raft Guide on...Expand for more
the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers. I moved around after that and landed in Conway, New Hampshire and worked in the Fryeburg School District for three years (1985 to 1988). It was fun being single in North Conway and working as a Ski Instructor at Attitash Mountain. I went back to UNH for my Master's Degree in Speech (1988), got married (1989) and eventually ended up in Lancaster, New Hampshire, where we have lived for 19 years. I now work in the Berlin Public Schools as a Speech Pathologist (28 years). I was hoping to switch careers to teaching (with only student teaching away from a second Master's degree). I would have to start back to base pay so I guess I will be a Speech Pathologist until I retire. I am married to Ed, who is currently a Merchant Marine from Mass Maritime, and we have a wonderful son Patrick, who is 17 years old and a junior in high school. We are looking at colleges for next year. He is hoping to major in Sports Management and play college baseball for a Division II school. He is very involved in sports, youth and government and many leadership groups at this time. Baseball is the love of his life--maybe someday you will see him in the Major's--at least that is his dream. Life will be quiet once he goes off to college and we will need to find other things to do with our lives (you all probably have already been there and done that). For now, I am enjoying having my son home for another year. Who knows what life will bring then!!
