Donna's Story
Life
Believe it or not, I joined the Army in 1976. It helped me gain self-confidence and self-esteem. Two qualities I lacked horribly. I was one of the first women to go through the same basic training as the men, at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and we were Regular Army, not WACs. We were the guinea pigs. I was very proud of myself. I was in the service until 1980 and was discharged at the rank of Sergeant. It was an experience and an adventure I would do all over again. (added 2/6/15: I just recently realized something I never thought about until speaking with an active duty military person who brought it to my attention). That I helped to make history for women, the U. S. Army and my Country. Not bad for a shy quiet girl from Michigan.
After the military, I came back to Michigan (had been stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma) and worked as a secretary. Atten...Expand for more
ded Word Processing School to advance my skills. I met my husband at one of my jobs and we have two children, a boy and a girl. I've traveled some since the military to Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, about 16 states and Washington D.C. Would like to visit all in my lifetime, especially, Alaska.
I've been an animal person since I can remember, so I had and have an array of animals: dogs, cats, birds, fish, leopard geckos, hamsters, rabbits and even rats (they are to cute!) I stayed home with my children and worked part-time there at Petsmart in Livonia (had to keep our animals fed). I haven't kept in touch with people from school. Lives take different roads, but they may cross again somewhere. My family and I moved to North Carolina in August 2005 as my husband got a job promotion. It's a welcomed change, another adventure! I hope to have many more of them.
