Donna's Story

The Student That Passed Out On Stage During the 9th. Grand Easter Choir Concert 1963 I was just a short, quiet, and unknown ninth grader at J. B Hood in 1963. Was in one school play; I might have had 4 lines in the entire play. However, I am sure many might remember that Choir member that fainted on stage at the Easter Concert in 1963. It was a hot and humid day and our "uniform dress" was black wool skirt/slacks and white blouse/dress shirt. The concert was long and the blue lights were hot. Miss Bowen , the Choir teacher; warned us that blue lights were hypnotic and can cause one to faint. We all were prepared to sing our best and not to faint; and if one of us felt dizzy, we were to step off stage..quietly.She told us in "jest ", that if anyone fainted on stage, she would fail that person. I stood on the front roll, on the stage, in the Soprano section. During the performance, the stage was getting hotter and hotter as the concert continued. Several members managed to be able to step down from the bleachers without incident. The last song was the Lords Prayer. I began to see dots before my eyes I began to feel dizzy. I felt that I could finish the song, I tried to lean up against the member next to me..she gave me a nudge to stand up straight...and over I fell in slow motion. I could see teachers jumping onto the stage to help me, and could hear all the screams from students and teachers as I was passing out. I lay there; face up and eyes open.Miss Bowen looked down at me ...Expand for more
and she continued to direct the final stanza of the song., as she stared at me. The curtain closed . Someone tried to get me up, but I did budge; so someone grabbed my long hair and drug me off stage!! The gym teacher came to me and sat me up, pushed my head between my bent knees and I was conscious again. I spent the next hour in the nurses office. Then, in the hallway, as I went to my next class; everyone was still talking about "that girl that fainted at the concert that morning. One student, walking beside me, asked me if I knew that girl that fainted, and if I thought she was pregnant. I calmly looked at her and said, "Yes I know her...she is not pregnant...that girl is me." Her eyes got huge, her mouth dropped open and she quickly apologized as she quickly scurried pasted me. I didn't get a failing grade from Miss Bowen, I made an A for that report card. Guess that was the only time I was the talk of the school., but still remained nameless. It was a forgettable incident for everyone else; but I still remember . I went on to W.W. Samuell, graduated in 1966. From there I joined the United States Marine Corps.and had a great tour of duty in the Marines. I married a Marine, (lasted 14 years) had one child. I now live in Georgia, remarried, retired and loving it. I am looking for a classmate friend, Mary McKissack. The last time I saw her was in 1978. Her married name was Butler . If anyone knows of Mary McKissack; please let her know that I would love to here from her.
