Donna's Story
I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after receiving a Navajo tribal scholarship in the 80s. I traveled back to San Diego many times and settled in NM. I reside in a semi rural community 26 miles out of Albuquerque and commute daily to the University of New Mexico where I work and attend school. I am currently studying Anthropology with a concentration in Ethnology.
I have a passion for clay and painted southwest and traditional American Indian designs on pottery. My work has transformed a plain gourd to a beautiful piece of art work (see my pictures).
Someday I hope to return to San Diego because I...Expand for more
long for walks on the beach, smelling the ocean air and feeling the breeze. My culture, traditions and American Indian spirituality keeps me here in NM where my people have been for 100 of years. Many of my classmates knew I am American Indian from the Dine' (Navajo) tribe, so my roots keep me here for now. My parents are survivors of the removal of American Indian children from their homes to assimilate into Anglo society. Learning about what has happened to them as children made it all the more interesting to study and stay in NM. I invite you to come and travel Navajo land. Until we meet again.
