Donna's Story
My story....hmmm. If you're from my high school days, there's a good chance you don't remember me at all. I tended to blend into the landscape. If you're from my military days, boy, have I got some 'splainin' to do!!
After my first marriage failed in 1986-87 (it took some time), I joined the Air Force and worked hard at self-destruction. I challenged my upbringing and the status quo. One friend during that time called me an enigma, but it was more confusion than anything else. In the middle of the chaos I met and married Alan, my current and last husband, in Cambridgeshire, England, where we were both stationed.
In 1995 we landed in Minot, ND, after a 4-year stay in upstate NY, and during our two years there I spent a lot of it on the road. Somewhere along the way I was diagnosed with a terminal illness, so when we retired we moved to Okla to be close to my family.
While I still have the auto-immune disease that knocked me down, God has miraculously restored me to what resembles normal activity. I've been able to complete my doctorate in Enlish, but have not actively pursued a career in academia. I may do that down the road, but for now I am working on my first children's book and playing the puppy momma to our English Springer Spaniels when I'm not otherwise occupied being our little town's librarian two days a week.
When Alan and I moved to rural Oklahoma from Okla City, we thought life would slow down, but in...Expand for more
some ways small-town life is more hectic because if one is willing to be involved, there is always work to be done. And then there's our little 13-acre place with a pond, where we have more to do both inside and outside, on the land and training dogs, than we can find time to do.
When football season rolls around we plan our schedule around OU games, and we have been bitten by the cruise bug. We love cruising and have made several wonderful friends on board. As of this draft, we have two cruises coming up in the next year and are counting the days until we step aboard another ship. We both enjoy SCUBA diving, but my health drastically limits my down time, so cruises offer us more options for entertainment.
My son, Mark, is in his twenties, and on his own in Okla. City. We see him periodically, mostly when we're going to burn some brush--he enjoys that kind of activity. I have two step-daughters, Nikki & Brandi, who are married and live in the Fort Worth area. Brandi gave us our first grandchild in April 2008, but we don't get to see him very often.
So, the question was who am I? I'm a very busy woman who wears many hats: wife, mom, grandma, librarian, puppymomma, dog trainer, housekeeper, author, scholar, crafter and general manager (as I would assume most women are). And when the work is done I enjoy crawling into bed with a good book with the hope of reading just a little bit before my eyes shut on their own.
