Donna's Story

Life I've been enjoying life one day at a time. I separated from the Marines May 2007 (22+ years)...that was a glorious day! I spent the last of my time serving as US media relations coordinator in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea) and Yemen. Take a look at the photos I've attached. I would love to go back. When I've exhausted the wanderlust that seems to pump through my veins with a vengeance, I'm not sure what I'll do! Having traveled the world over, I find it very easy to appreciate living in America! I'm now married with four awesome, grown step-children to complement my awesome son, Joshua. I also have 3 grandchildren (my oldest step-daughter's brood). For now, my husband and I winter on the road and in Key West and spend the warmer months up north near the extended family. We've succumbed to the fact that we're not the settling down types! Show me the road; let me explore! I still love Prince, Queen Latifah and LL Cool J, but have since added Celine Dion, Martina McBride, the Dixie Chicks, international reggae and soft Sub-Saharan African music to my favorites list (I know that's a weird combination). I love watching some reality TV, the Law & Order series, LOST, CSI (all three) and any History Channel specials. I enjoy reading my OPRAH mags, running a few miles a day, travelling, and cuddling with my hunny. Life has thrown me a few curve balls, but all in all, I don't think I'd have it any other way. School Looking back, I have only a few small regrets not even worth mentioning. I never belonged to any "clicks" and basically have made it a point to keep it that way throughout the years--I prefer to give everyone a chance to show their depth (or how shallow they are if that fits) to me first rather than treat someone a certain way because of how they dress, how much money they have, who they ate lunch with or some other lame label-deriving stigma. I was extremely friendly and believe I was genuinely nice to everyone (just wish I'd have put a few people in their place a time or two). I have many fond memories of my 11/12th grades at Patterson. (I had transferred in after graduating St Elizabeth's Business School.) I enjoy remembering the balloons a bunch of us bought for Ms Brooks (what a wonderful woman), Ring Dance (Can I get an AMEN on how insane the 80s were!?), volleyball games (did we suck or what?!), senior trip to NYC (I still want to beat up Bertina for stealing money from some of us!), senior cruise (has anyone heard from Sarah Foster?), wearing a goofy reindeer outfit for a Christmas assembly (yikes), hanging out with Ursula Carter (She has the most beautiful twin daughters who just started college and a beautiful husband--lucky girl!), and serving on the Yearbook Staff (Lori, Kelly, Kathy, Lisa, Helen, Diane, Ms Zvonar and Me!) Lord knows we had sooooo much fun! Since the 94 reunion, I've gotten back in...Expand for more
contact with quite a few people through Classmates. I am amazed at how beautiful my highschool buddies, Sandy Pasco, Donna Black, and Kathy Banz are (still). My then best friend, Ursula Carter and Gail White have been in contact with me. I am so proud of their success stories! I get excited every time we have a "mini" reunion via email or phone. I would love to know how Kim Smith, Penny Morgan, Laura Leonard, Lori Hoffman, Robin Campbell, Pebbles (Morticia Morgan), Vanessa, Warren Gee, Pam McGee, Zagrafa (spelling oops) Kinigopolis, Lisa McMillan, Antoine & Rodney Friend, Alex, and Kelly Glacken are. Has everyone's dreams come true? Are you happy? Blessings to all, Donna College It's amazing how much fun I've actually had as a "non-traditional" student at Kent State. It's cool watching the kids fresh out of high school deal with the college lifestyle. I think military life (barracks, rules, comaraderie, etc.) is somewhat similar. I look forward to finally finishing my degree. Workplace Currently self-employed. I have a successful marketing/advertising company that my husband and I run from our Cleveland loft. We have a good life. Military What an experience! I am one of the Few, the Proud! I spent 22 years in the Corps, and I've been stationed in Djibouti-Africa, Albany-GA, New Orleans, Kansas City, Iwakuni-Japan, Indianapolis-IN, Camp Pendleton-CA, Baltimore, Norfolk-VA, Jacksonville-NC, Youngstown-OH, and of course, Parris Island-SC! I have met so many wonderful people...so many different cultures, backgrounds and personalities that worked hard to get the job done. During the past 22 years, I've taught rock climbing/rappelling, escorted international media, coordinated projects directly with various African nations' leadership and American embassy personnel, instructed hand-to-hand combat/martial arts classes, conducted numerous funer details, ran 8 marathons, served as a correspondent/photographer, lead Marines and did so many crazy things I don't think I would have tried had I stayed in Baltimore. Nine of my best girlfriends are Marines, and we've remained in close contact more than 18 years no matter where we've been stationed. In light of recent events, my heart beats proudly knowing the men/women serving in Iraq/Afghanistan/abroad (and within the USA) are making a difference in so many lives. I don't agree with this "war on Terror," but one thing's for certain, I don't regret one day I've served in the Marines. It has all been GREAT! Sunsets, fluffy clouds, thunder, classical music, Haagen Dazs ice cream, snowstorms, birds chirping, children laughing, flowers blooming, and sweet kisses have so much more meaning now! Semper Fidelis! God Bless the Corps! As a young (unknown) Marine once scribbled on an MRE (C-Rats) Box in Vietnam, "For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the protected will NEVER know." Thank and hug a veteran today!
