Donny's Story
I became a better student in college than at Willingham. Have always loved the outdoors and nature, got a degree in Forest Management. Became an officer in the USAF after graduation and went to undergraduate pilot training. Flew the C-141 until 1995, 3 years active duty, 23 years Reserve. As Viet Nam wound down I was offered an early out, and took it to pursue an airline career. Worked 17 years at Eastern Airlines, flying the B-727, A-300, and DC-10. Lost my job in 1991 and had to start over. Found myself with an opportunity to start an airline and was the only pilot for a while as we got financing together and assembled a plan. Unfortunately, the owners were fueled soley by greed but I stuck with what seemed like a one out of a thousand ch...Expand for more
ance of success. Oddly enough I hired as one of two pilot assistants, the son of Mrs Atwater(substitute teacher at Willingham during our time). He was at Lanier and I played against him on the Golf team, but we did not know each other. This was in Ft Lauderdale, which made the meeting even more bizarre. We succeeded in getting our certification in June 1994 and the same day the new company was sold to Rob Swenson, the son of Arctic Cat snowmobile founder, an aviation entreprenuer and very legitimate businessman. Today it is a major airline based out of Orlando, but primary operation is in Atlanta. I enjoyed a lifetime of experiences while there and retired in 2006.
