Dora B.'s Story

Wow! How did 50 years go by so fast? I haven'€™t seen most of you since graduation day. A history of what I have been doing since then. I attended Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX then Pan American University (back when it still had that cool name). I married James V. Mathis, Jr. in 1971 and never had kids,€“ by choice. I worked in the family newspaper business for a few years and eventually purchased the Rio Grande Herald with my husband. In 1982, we moved to Houston where I worked with Helen Gordon Publications, who then transferred me to San Antonio as Sales Manager for The Green Sheet. I stayed in the publishing business with Sutherland Publications at the Leon Valley Leader. Then I did a big career switch-up by entering into property management with the Guy Chipman company in San Antonio. In 1989 the husband and I sold all our property in Texas and moved to Hawaii - - just because. We lived in Honolulu on Oahu and visited Maui and Kaui every chance we got. I earned my real estate license there and managed resort properties for Chaney-Brooks and Company until family concerns brought us back to the mainland. Over the next few years we bounced around to several cities in Texas and Louisiana as my husband's jobs with newspapers or my jobs with property management comp...Expand for more
anies took us to Mathis, TX, Sulphur & Leesville Louisiana, Killeen, Waco, Austin, back to San Antonio and then to West Monroe, LA, where I lived from 1998 to 2016. There, I managed international sales for a distributor of oilfield and gas station equipment, followed by managing international sales for a paper and bag manufacturing company. In 1998 I was hired at Chase Manhattan (now JPMorgan Chase) to set up bilingual customer service for mortgage servicing. I managed that function and progressed to managing home equity and high risk functions through the mortgage fiasco. I worked for Chase for 17 years and retired-- for two months -- before I was seduced back to work for Origin Bank of Ruston, LA. After that I worked at the University of Louisiana at Monroe as administrator of the Perkins Loan Program. I lost my loving husband of 42 years to lung cancer in 2013. I retired and moved back to Edinburg, TX in October 2016 to be near my mom & siblings. I am trying to find volunteer opportunities and maybe a part-time job to keep from being bored and because I love to stay busy. My sister and I have a home in Edinburg and a home at a camp by Falcon Lake and spend most weekends there fishing year-round, hunting in winter and enjoying the outdoors. Looking forward to the next 25 years !!
