Dora's Story

Hello everyone, Hope all is going well with you and yours. It's been 35+ yrs. and alot has happened..... Left Las Cruces in 71, got married to my high school sweetheart. We moved to Denver CO where our beautiful daughter was born in 72. Attended Emily Griffith Cooking School an extension of Denver Community College. Then, worked a short stint as a health care and public relations volunteer for women and children at Mariposa Health Care Clinic. My hubby enlisted in the Air Force in 73-77 and we moved to Biloxi, MS, Grand Forks, ND and Alamogordo, NM. In ND, worked as a bilingual receptionist for the Migrant Health Clinic of Crookston County at UND and was an active member of the Migrant Public Relations Commiitee. Also worked as a cashier in retail stores at KMart in Alamogordo, Gibsons in Las Cruces and J.C. Penny's at Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso. Moved back home while hubby worked at WSMR. We moved to El Paso, TX where my hubby worked for US INS. We bought our first house and raised our daughter there. Volunteered in public schools VIP program, attended IBC, got certified as CTR, worked for El Paso Claims Company. Later on we became foster parents and then adoptive parents. We settled our family of five out in Radium Springs NM while our daughter finished high school at OHS and our sons graduated at MHS. We're The Brady Bunch of Alma Maters...lol....but mine is LCHS- GO BULLDAWGS! We're truly blessed and proud to have all our children, grandchildren, family and friends living and thriving in Las Cruces! Since then, worked at Jornada Elementary, attended DABCC Early Childhood Program, NMSU College of Education and currently working for LCPS in Special Education. We built our first house in Las Cruces where we reside at the present time. Through the years of moving around and traveling, I've learned that life is a journey not a destination....Life Is Good! If you get a chance to say hello just send me a private email or post a note on my bulletin board. God Bless, Dora REMEMB...Expand for more
ER WHEN.... Tried out for the Cougars Pom-Pom Girls Squad at Lynn Jr. High and we danced a routine to Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. In the fifth grade I was bashful, but my teacher at Hermosa Heights taught me how to play "Boom-Bi-Atta" on the autoharp and to sing the solo to "Que Sera" in the afterschool program. We all had to perform "This Land is Your Land" to pass his class. Thank you, Mr. Manila, wherever you are! 1963, was in Mrs.Wormund's third grade class and school was dismissed early the day JFK was assassinated. The heinous act of violence had a profound impact upon the world as we watched the news in horror. Felt a great loss of hope for humanity and sensed the world coming to a monumental eerie silence. We would take field trips to the Old Mesilla school auditorium for our annual grand event "In Living Colors" The stage would become a live Masterpiece Theatre and the participants would pose in still life portraying a famous painting. Was mesmerized with wonder at the beauty of these art performances. The Neighborhood Youth Corps. was one of the best resources on summer jobs for the underpriveledged and low economic status youth. Had some memorable summer work opportunities working under the direction of Mr. Bright. Summertime at the movies would get packed when youths could get in to watch a movie for general audiences with two empty quart size cartons of milk. Days hamburgers were the best at six for a dollar and a coke was only a quarter. Played baseball with the neighborhood sandlot kids, Patsy Lujan and her sisters, Natalia, Irene, Isela and Rosela. They turned out to be my hubby's cousins. We were required to wear blue jumper uniforms for PE and GAA every year. Ugh! Was in GAA for 9th grade basketball, volleyball and track at Court Jr. High. Sports kept me in shape, positive, focused and out of trouble. Thanks to my favorite Coach Olivia Ogas! The pretty secretary at Hermosa Heights turned out to be my sister-in-law Juanita Holguin and the Principal was Mr. Baker.
