Joanna's Story

After UNC-G, I served as Artist-in-Residence in Rutherford County, worked with school children, and did community theater. In the summers I played cocktail piano in restaurants and country clubs. When I was about 25, I modeled for a panty hose package sold in K-Mart -- my ten years of fame. ha I wrote local commercials for WITN-TV for a year, and then I moved to Los Angeles in 1979. With a partner, I wrote and pitched scripts for TV. In LA, everyone who goes there to learn about the industry gets a Day Job (if they like to eat and buy stuff), and mine was contracting support services with law firms. Ultimately, I worked exclusively eight years for Latham & Watkins, the 2nd (or 4th) largest global law firm, depending on which week we're talking about. While law was never what I pictured myself doing, it was the most interesting thing I did during my 25 years in LA. In 1992, I met a man with a printing company who shared my desire never to get married. So, of course, that's exactly what we did three years later. We were childfree by choice, compatible and happy, and we bought a house 15 minutes from downtown LA and walking distance from the Pasadena Rose Bowl. His passion was renovating vintage BMW motorcycles, and we toured the southwest a...Expand for more
nd he did rallies. Then eight years later he died suddenly of undiagnosed cardiomyopathy at the age of 43. Nothing in life prepares you for the death of your husband. After his death, my feeling that I would never leave California changed. I worked five more years, and then sold my house in March 2005 and moved first to Asheville, then to Sanford where I grew up and where my 85-year-old father and brother and various nephews and nieces live. I bought a condo in the restored elementary school (built in 1937). Sanford is certainly different from the fast lane, but except for the occasional odd look when I forget myself and say exactly what's on my mind, I'm learning what it means to have roots. I plan to spend two months living in Costa Rica this coming year where an artist friend has a house, if Sanford gets too busy for me. I have recently received training to teach English as a Second Language and adult reading, as a volunteer. (I got gringo-fluent in Spanish while I lived in LA.) Hopefully, this fall I will get down to Ocracoke and go fishing. Ocracoke is the last place I visited before I left for California in 1979. I got arrested for sleeping on the beach, and throwing an apple core on the sand. I'll try to toe the line this time.
