Doreen (Dee)'s Story

Life Finally became a Member of Classmates again in hopes of hearing from some of you! Time flies and we are all getting old (that stinks)...but at the same time, wiser in the sense of knowing that friendships are precious and priceless. I have (by design and choice) absolutely no social media footprint...no smartphone (I still have a dumbphone I rarely use), no Facebook, no iPad, nor even texting ability. Email and the good ol' phone (landline to boot!) are the only way to reach me in person (or snail mail, of course, now that my info has been updated). I followed my heart into the medical field after graduation, working first at EK and then various specialty practices in physicians offices for many years; at the same time, I took college classes as I could and was fortunate to have many excellent teaching doctors help me along my road of self-education. I finally ended up doing home nursing care for terminal oncolology patients...which was the most rewarding thing I've ever done...until 2004 when I went on permanent disability because of back problems. I sure do miss that work and being "adopted" by so many families, as always seemed to happen. During all those working years, I managed to get married and have 2 children and 1 grandson; he lives far away in DC so don't play the usual "gramma" role. My son lives in Denver but unfortunately, chooses estrangement so we have no contact to speak of. My parents, whom many of you met back in the day, finally passed away in 2006 and 2008; Dad at 102 and Mum at 100. I had gotten so tired of people asking me, "Are your folks STILL alive?" that I finally began replying, "Yes, Heaven doesn't want them and Hell is afraid they'll take over!" My a...Expand for more
nswer always got a laugh, but it was a tongue- in-cheek truth! My husband and best friend for 35 years, Randy, passed away in January, 2016. I now live in SW Denver in an adult community of 70 patio homes and truly enjoy my easier location to shopping and necessary facilities, unlike the distance and isolation of my former home in the mountains for 28 years. However, 2016 was a difficult year of loss...first Randy, then having to put down my beautiful 33 yr old horse, Lady, in April of that year and then sell the home I'd loved for so long. But, life goes on and is ever changing! We either adapt or perish. Loss is part of life and can make us stronger, in my opinion. I wrote a column for the local newspaper for 8 years and now, am working on a book and will be actively seeking more freelance work as time permits. Medicine and writing have always been equal passions in my psyche; I followed medicine to earn money and didn't have time to write. Now, I have the time to devote to writing...even though it may never lead to an income! Still, it's wonderful to be able to look back on my life and say I've done the things which meant the most and know I've made a positive difference in this world. At this point in my life, I'm living alone with my cat, Murphy, and must admit that I love it. Always busy and never enough hours in the day. Was President of the HOA here for almost 3 years, but gave that up in 2015; it's tough to find others who actually want to work. However, my own time spent in that position was fun and rewarding and It was truly a special time for me. If this is retirement, I LOVE IT! I tell people there are 3 words I never want to hear again: 'What's for dinner?" !!!!!!!
