Doris's Story

Life has been good since 1961. I was married at 17, had my son, David, & graduated from Temple High at 18, divorced & had my daughter, Renee, at 19 and then in Dec. 1963 at age 20, I married the love of the rest of my life, John Gupton. We moved to Austin in 1965 & on to Cedar Park (now just a suburb of Austin) in 1968 where we "grew up" along with our community, & were involved with the Volunteer Fire Dept. and early politics. John's 3 children lived with us part of those years too so we had a houseful. I never worked outside of our home, and loved it. John was a union carpenter before going to work for the Leander I.S.D. He retired in 1999 as Director of Construction Management after 21 years with the schools. We had camped & traveled all our married life, so we spent most of the next 9 years in our travel trailer. It was a wonderful life. On Aug. 24, 2008, I lost my precious husband to lung cancer, so life has changed again for me. I have lots of friends and family to support me so I am thankful. I am involved in Bible Studies and volunteer work at my church so that keeps me busy. My 19 year old grandson, Austin, lives with me so he is a big help...sometimes :) David & his family live nearby, and Renee and family live in Grandview (so. of Ft. Worth). With all the biological, step, & adoptions in our family we have lots of grandkids and 16 great grandkids. I love them all. I loved growing up in Temple, and as long as I had family there I went back all the time. Lots of good memories. Update: January 23, 2010 The last year has been a really good one for me. In January we found out that the Leander ISD school board voted to name the new football stadium being built here in Cedar Park, "The John Gupton Stadium" after my husband. We are so proud & so honored. Also this year my grandson, Austin married Kendra Kaye & on Nov.20, John David Gupton (my 17th great grandchild) was born to them. They live with me so John gets lots of Granny time. I also joined a group here called Senior Circle so really stay busy now. It has been a real blessing from God for me, as there is something to do every day. Through Classmates I have reconnected with a friend from childhood days, Linda Taylor, and it is wonderful. We talk often & met in Temple with another friend, Tommy, from our teenage years. We all spent hours sharing memories. We hope to do it again soon. I have l...Expand for more
ots of plans for this year so life is good. Update October 10 2021 Where does the time go? My son just turned 60. How could I be old enough to be the mother of a 60 yr old? Lol In 2009 I got reacquainted with my high school sweetheart & 2 other long ago friends. He & I became best friends & made great plans for a future together. Unfortunately He got diagnosed with Parkinson's & passed away last year. I really miss him. On a lighter note, I have 7 more great-grandkids now for a total of 23. My 2 newest are my son's grandkids: Ember born July 27 & Milo September24. I love holding these little bundles of joy. I also have an almost 2 year old great great-grandson. My daughter has her hands full with her 6 kids and 13 grandkids. Her husband passed away suddenly 3 years ago, .Her youngest son Isaac is a blessing to her My son David is my blessing .He helps me anytime I ask & lots of times he takes care of things before I ask. He is retired from The University of Texas & single again so has more free time. His son Austin & wife Kendra live very close to me so that is nice Their son John is almost 12 now and special to me . He stays with me so much that he has his own room at my house'. Besides socializing with different groups I belong to, I attend classes, & events at my church where I serve in the Stephen Ministry. GOD is #1 in my life, Before COVID19 I traveled a lot. My husband & I had mostly traveled by car. I still travel by car but also by bus, plane, train,& cruise ships. I finished seeing the 50 states with a vacation to Hawaii & 3 cruises to Alaska, went on a Viking River cruise in Europe, took a cruise from San Diego through the Panama canal to Cartagena, Columbia to Galveston TX with other stops along the way & cruises all over the Caribbean. Road Trips: David, John & I drove to upstate New York in 2019 to visit my brother & go by way of Niagara Falls etc. One of my friends & I were group leaders for many Senior Circle bus trips to fun cities like Branson Mo., Nashville, Savannah, New Orleans, Pigeon Forge TN & Albuquerque NM, I have posted lots of pictures from these 11 years on here but forgot to update this profile. I will try to be more prompt in the future.. Life is good so live it. ;-
