Doris's Story

4/13/16 Life: 2 kids, 7 granddaughters, 0 pets. After high school graduation went to work at U of R as receptionist/bookkeeper/secretary to the Dean of University School. Left there after marriage to become stay-at-home mom, and then later moved to Webster, NY, while it was still a small town. We stayed to watch it turn into a suburb after Xerox joined the community, and it is still my address, although I recently had a house fire and am living in the Senior apartments in Macedon, NY... I became self-employed after second child entered school, and typed for court reporters for the next 15 or 20 years. I retired when husband retired, and for a few years we had fun with the grandkids that came along. We spent vacation times on Cape Cod and in the flea markets in Mass. I searched for valentines of the early 1800s and he looked for battery operated toys of the 1940's. We were in a couple of handbell choirs, and we did some clowning with a group of clowns. When Lewis became ill, I became nursemaid. After his death, I began doing merchandising and loved it. Yes, I still worked at 86; I didn't think I would know how to be as happy without work and all of the friends that come with it. Until recently I was usually found on Mondays and Fridays after noon in Target Webster, putting out new orders of costume jewelry and sunglasses. Or, in Victor Target, doing costume jewelry/sunglasses on Tuesday. However, I finally retired recently and said goodbye to ...Expand for more
everyone in Target. It was a sad day and I already miss it. I knew the day would come when I became REALLY old and l would fill the time by sitting in a rocker and sewing a fine seam or doing a little counted cross stitch...or dozing off while reading Vanity Fair, but hoped that it would be further in the future. In my earlier years, I watched the "old" men who bagged groceries at our local IGA and wondered why they seemed to enjoy working there, why they didn't retire. Now that I am "old" I know the answer. As my friends left me and I found that I had fewer, and fewer, and fewer, I needed people around me every day. Thus, I truly loved working. Hmmmm... what will I find next.... A short time ago I retired to apartment 22 in the Senior Project at 1 Stone St, in Macedon, NY, and have found the other occupants to be loving and generous. I am sure that I will be happy here on my next adventure, with my new friends and lots of time to use my computer, receive emails addressed to dorib at ix.netcom.com, answering them, and playing cards and other games with the residents of this complex...... It has been five months now, and I am more than happy here. At Christmas time, we trimmed the large tree in the community room and then had a pizza supper before retiring to our apartments, where a I trimmed a small tree in my apartment. On Friday nights, a few of the residents get together in the community room and play cards or games, and I have grown to know those residents... and, yes, I am more than happy with my new friends, and hope all of you are happy, too!
