Patricia's Story
Life
My Spouse
At a drop in for "Parents without Partners"
My Pets:
When my husband and i moved here to Virginia we had one cat named Axel who was our pride and joy. Shortly thereafter, a mommy cat had two kittens in our outside workroom and my husband decided he would like to keep them all so we had them neutered and we now have four adorable cats. I love animals so I was very happy with this arrangement.
My husband, Bob and I are both involved in many community organizations and do volunteer work. Bob, my husband also plays Senior basketball and softball in an over-seventys team.
My Job:
I screened out and research medical data. I worked for IMS Inc. for 27 years, and worked part time in customer service for a uniform manufacturing company, plus I was a mystery shopper on the side. As of April 1st of 2002 I was retired. Hooray!!!!! In 2002 shortly after I "retired" I worked for "Home Instead" caring for elderly people in their homes and taking them to various appointments, etc., plus I was a tour guide for a year at Skyline Caverns. I quit that and in 2004 went to work for Heritage Hall as a receptionist. (a nursing home). I retired from that in April 2006 and now just fill in for the girl who took my place when she is out. I have various hobbies such as: stained glass, embroidery, knitting, reading, gardening and I am now taking piano lessons.
My Kids:
My oldest son Dan is Autistic, but lives on his own and works. He has worked at the same job and lived in the same apartment for 21 years and is 49 yrs old. My next son Jim is 48 and just got married the 1st of September. He works for Mack Truck in their Computer Division. Bill is the next in line, and is 47 and works at the old Westinghouse plant as a Foreman. He is married and has 4 children. Next in line is Tari who is 43 and is married and has a son Grant, 13, and Anthony, 5. Her husband is a Police Sergeant, and she has a degree in Secondary Education. Alan is 39 and was married and lives in Baton Rouge, LA . He and his "significant other" run two Subway stores. Last but not least is my daughter Joy, 34,who is married to a policeman who is on the drug task force in Alexandria, VA., She works for Lockheed Martin and has travels a lot. Her husband is a policeman in Alexandria, VA., and Graduated from Wesleyan. She and her husband now have two children: Vincent, age 5 and Tyson, age 2.
Much of my time now is spent baby-sitting.
School
Unfortunately our family was a very dysfunctional family and moved around a lot and I attended many different schools, therefore I didn't have a lot of close friends and wasn't allowed to do extracarricular activities. The time I did spend with my friends I enjoyed very much. There are four teachers who really stick out in my mind. First was my first grade teacher Mrs. Rinker in Monroeton, PA. She made me stay in a lot of recesses and work on my penmanship. Any of us who wanted to could visit her and her sister at their home anytime we wanted and I took full advantage of that. She was very partial to me but worked with me to better myself. Needless to say, my penmanship is still poor. Another was Fan Taylor at Killbuck. She was I believe a first grade teacher, but collected coins and explained to anyone who had an interest what the different letters meant on the coins. Everyone at the school loved Fan. Then there was Mr. Peters who I j...Expand for more
ust thought the world of. The problem is, I can't remember which grade he taught or what school. Last but not least was Mrs. Wood who taught business courses at Elmira Free Academy. She was a very big influence in my life. She really rode me hard and at the time, I didn't like her, but she recommended me for my first job and gave me a high recommendation. Sometimes you don't appreciate the very people you should appreciate the most!!! I married right out of high school and have to admit I was not mature enough to handle it. There are so many things I would do differently today, but I guess God needed me to learn a few lessons. Today my husband and I live in Virginia. He is retired and writes and plays senior softball and basketball. We both participate in State and National Senior Games. He has two children and 4 grandchildren and I have 9 children and 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandaughter. We are both active in community affairs and the church. I do stained glass work and scrapbooking and am retired but spend 3 days a week as a tour guide in Skyline Caverns. The rest of the time I spend as much time as I can with my grandchildren, and I am as my license plate reads "cntntd" (contented). Dec. 17, 2004 and I have been at work full-time now since the 7th of September. Now I work as a receptionist at a nursing home and I love it. I not only interact with people, but get to spend time with our "residents", as I use my breaks to visit with them while I deliver their mail. My plans at this time are to work till I am 70 so I can build up more retirement money in our 401K here at work.
It is now December of 2008 and I have not worked for three years. With the economy the way it is and our stocks way down, it looks like I may be going back to work after the Holidays.
When I have a good book to read and it is quiet, that is my favorite way to relax. If the TV is on or there is noise around, picking up my crocheting and working on that calms me.

As an update to my story. Now my husband and I both work the polls. Bob still plays softball at 82, and I volunteer at our Heritage Society and take care of peoples pets when they go away. My youngest daughter has two more boys, and my oldest grandaughter has given me a great-grandson.
Life is good!!
It is now 2018. All is still well on the upper Southern end. My husband still plays softball (at 85) and is still active in the community and church. I have cut back on a couple of things and added others. My "job" now is pet-sitting. I still work the polls, volunteer at other organizations, am more active in the church, and joined a Southern Gospel singing group and sing tenor. We sing mainly at nursing homes and churches. There are 21 of us and represent 12 different churches of different denominations. I now have 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Since last updated, my next oldest son passed away at 53 from colon cancer. He would be 59 now. My husband's son also passed away two years ago at 52 of lung cancer (he did not smoke). We have lost 3 cats and have 2 left. I spaded up the vegetable garden and my husband is getting ready to plant that. After paying for lawn maintenance for two years after our tractor died, my husband bought a new 240 John Deere and will be mowing our acre again, and I am getting ready (once we get the weeds out) to plant more flowers.
