Dorothy-Jean's Story
It is a long story - since it's been almost 40 years since we graduated. I followed my interest in music; I went to UBC - got my BMus there, Juilliard School (Professional Studies) and finally UCLA for a MM and DMA (doctor of musical arts). I lived in Paris for a couple of years (singing mostly at the Paris Opera) and returned to Canada and sang where ever I was engaged.
I moved to LA and married a cellist in the LA Phil that I met at Juilliard. Sadly - it was not meant to be and I eventually met someone else, had a daughter with him. I moved to the Chicago area with Melanie's dad and eventually parted ways, although he is still very involved in her life.
Now I am a single mom. I teach voice and have a great many talented students. I am an advocate for music education for at risk populations in Chicago Public Schools - for a private foundation. I also have a MAT in Special Education and I work with children - adults with learning disabilities.
Needless to say it is an unbelievably busy life. My daughter is 13 and most of my car...Expand for more
eer decisions have been made to keep a similar or complimentary schedule to hers..
My wish list includes: moving back to the west coast, traveling more and sleeping in. Melanie is entering high school next year so I know I will be here another 4 years.
My hobbies include; listening to music - symphonies, chamber music, operas (of course), movies, travel, hiking (nothing too strenuous - requiring climbing gear), and going to watch my daughter and my students perform! Occasionally I dust off the vocal cords and sing, but my schedule isn't very 'performer' friendly anymore. It is more fun to sing now because I want to not because I have to.
Even though it has been many years since I have lived in the Vancouver area, I have fond memories of high school and UBC. Sorry this looks a little too much like a resume but I would love to hear how people are doing and hope they are enjoying life's many beautiful opportunities!
PS
I listen to ALL kinds of music and my daughter keeps me current on what she and her friends are listening to.
