Dorothy's Story

I was born in Valley Baptist Hospital June 24, 1949, but my mom was just visiting her folks in Weslaco at the time and I grew up in Houston. I did come back to the Valley for summer and Christmas visits. I stayed one summer when I was 13 at the Girl Scout Camp Lula Sams in Brownsville. My grandma was the camp director and my Aunt Susan was the lead swimming teacher. Those were happy days. More happy days followed in 1967-68 when I had my freshman year at Pan Am and again stayed with my grandparents when grandma was a botany/biology instructor at the college. Then John Robert Veale (whose dad was a Christian Church minister in San Antonio after having started his family in Edinburg at the Church there back in 40's)' and I met at church camp in the hill country near Kerrville. He had cousins from Harlingen: David, Mark & Bobby who also came to camp. Lotsa Veale boys running around at that time. He and I met at camp when I was 14 and started writing when I was 16. We're about to celebrate our 39th anniversary the day after Christmas this year. Married John Robert Veale,my church camp sweetheart in 1970 while we were at University of Houston. Started out teaching second grade, but paused for births of 2 boys, 1 girl, followed by a 3rd son (10-year spread). Was a very busy, on-the-go not stay-at-home (but unemployed) mom...always involved with other moms and kids in babysitting co-ops, food co-ops, day camps, art, sewing, guitar, gardening..AAUW Nursery School, Orange Childbirth Education Classes, La Leche League Houston,Beaumont, Orange,San Antonio (and thru my daughter in Athens,GA .We moved about 10 times total to be closer to school and work in and around Houston followed by a brief sojourn in McAllen and briefer still in San Benito in the Valley and then (7 years in Orange, Texas) and finally to our present home since 1985 in San Antonio, Texas. I substitute taught all ages for a while when the youngest was about 8. Homeschooled for 2 years; sold Tupperware during the 50th anniversary of the product (Saw Kathy Norton Kent during that period). My current fun job since December of '98 is overnight security guard at SeaWorld. My grandchildren delight in telling that their "Nanny" gets to babysit Shamu. I love swapping recipes and plants (cuttings, seeds, etc). A friend once told me that trying to follow my conversation was like chasing a butterfly. I also love to crochet and am always making baby blankets for babies and grandbabies of friends at work. Joyce Jozwiak's project for helping the elderly is so needed everywhere. I was impressed and encouraged to read about it in the e-mails from our class reunion communications. My mom ( died Dec 12. 2012 at age 89) adjusted to life in Kerrville after losing her home of 55 years on Hardwood Lane, Hou, Tx in Tropical Storm Allyson (my childhood home is no longer there). Our hearts go out to all those visited by Hurricane Ike. I hope everyone's doing OK now. If I find I'm getting steamed about something..or someone..I take a walk. While in Athens, Ga temporarily for 6 months I was lucky to have a little city park on the Oconee River nearby. We took the "Ben Burton" trail from a street that runs behind my dau...Expand for more
ghter's apt. We saw rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons & deer. I've found and transplanted beautiful wildflowers: pink cherokee roses, daisies, and a little medicinal plant the Indians called "pepsassua" (or something like that). My son who also lives in this area got me started looking for Morel mushrooms. After 6 months in Athens GA helping my daughter finish nursing school, I left behind a productive little postage stamp garden that my daughter reports they are eating from daily: the best cherry and grape tomatoes, basil, green beans and cucumbers. Now, I'm jealous 'cause I don't have such a thing here, although I do have figs and pears and a neighbor just gave me starts of a fabulous cactus that was growing over her fence and has pear sized rose colored fruits with white flesh and little black seeds like those in Kiwi. I do get excited about gardening and am transforming our study/guestroom into another garden room like my bedroom at daughter Violet's. I've already got a potted palm, and some other tropicals and making curtains with leafy green patterns to hang. I think this will be the new home of my Fantasy Anion Humidifier bought from TexRenFest one year and used in Athens, Ga in my Good Fairy Grandmother Abode. I hope old friends remember me as kind and considerate, but in my youth I think I was pretty wrapped up in myself..shy and not too self confident. My memory just got jogged. I wasn't so self absorbed that I didn't already love all kinds of volunteerism then, and I still do now. I'll just save those stories for later. Well, it is later. November17, 2015. A lot has happened since 2001. I know that many of our classmates, their parents, and in some sad cases, some of their children or grandchildren have died as have mine. My spouse of 45 years is still with me, thankfully. He has had more personal loss than I, although we certainly share in the loss of our youngest son, Caleb (5-16-82 to 2-18-2014). John continually says how glad he is that I am alive. July 2, 2015 I appeared to be having a possible heart attack as I was into the 4th hour of a workman's comp required Functional Capacity Exam. It was harder and harder for me to breathe and I slumped in a chair, vomited clear pink fluid into the trash can they brought me, and then they called 911. It took a day or so for them to figure out my heart was almost perfect. Then they looked at the lungs and found 3 huge blood clots had passed thru my heart and into the lungs, causing the great difficulty breathing. They are now practically dissolved and I have been able to fly out to CA to see the newest grandbaby. We are going to renew our vows on a beach at sunset for an early celebration of our 45 years of marriage. More on that later. I 've decided that the chronic ankle/leg pain and back pain from multiple compression fractures can be tolerated just as well in a tropical location as here at home. Had some vacation days to burn anyway. And why am I still working? I dunno. I love baby sitting Shamu and am finally back to that on light duty hours 3:30-7:30 a.m Thurs - Monday. 'Hoping that the sky stays clear enough to see Leonid Meteor Showers to whale song in the background.

John R Veale, you really know how to speak my love language. Finding 2 bowlsful of lychees from the India Store was such a delight. There's one bowl left and we're already planting the seeds. <3
