Dorothy's Story
I always wanted to be a writer. My family and friends thought that was a romantic idea. As it turns out, they were right...I had little talent. I took a creative writing class in junior college and my poems were so silly my classmates laughed. This made me rethink my goals. I went away to college in the Sierra Nevadas with a bunch of friends when I was 18. I was a free spirit who sometimes went to class. It was a great year in so many ways. At the end of a year we returned to Redwood City and I lasted another semester as an English major before dropping out to work.
As fortune would have it I went to work at a County Hospital in San Mateo, CA. I worked there for years (first in the clinics then in the ER) - and became friends with the nurses. I decided to become an RN and enrolled in University of San Francisco when I was 23. I was a timid student - who was constantly afraid I would harm my patients. Thankfully we all survived. I married and moved to Arizona. I was homesick for what seemed like years. I missed my family and friends in the Bay Area...not to mention the heat - it is HOT in Arizona in the summer. Of course I moved in JULY! Didn't occur to me that any place could get this hot...no air conditioning - I didn't know the luxury of central air for several years.
I went to work at a hospital in Tucson while my husband attend...Expand for more
ed medical school. I worked on medical units and in the neonatal ICU. We then moved to Phoenix for his Residency. I liked Phoenix much better! For a short time I. left Nursing and was a flight attendant. That was glamorous and fun, but I really missed nursing. I missed the immediacy in which you entered people's lives - the courage of my patients, and the challenge.
I then became pregnant - had a baby girl (21 years ago) and immediately loved being a mom. Unfortunately our marriage didn't last, we divorced - I moved back to California when Sarah was 3 and we stayed for 3 years. It was good to be with my mom and be "home" in RWC for a time.
I returned to Phoenix when Sarah was 6 and have been here ever since. I have remarried to a wonderful man - Sarah is currently in medical school - and I am still in nursing. I work in a respected hospital that makes me proud. I think the decision to become a nurse was one of the best decisions I ever made and forced me to be a more practical and thoughtful person. The other good decision was to have a child - she has been such a joy to raise. I am so proud of her.
I have 4 dogs (my theory is women get pets as their children grow up and move out). My husband, Scott, and I like to travel, go to the gym, ride bikes, go to concerts, hang out, go to movies and enjoy life...when it's not too hot~
