Doug's Story

(July 2009) After Erindale I went to Wilfrid Laurier University for 3 years and got my B.A. (History). Ended up working for an Allied Van Lines agent for a couple of years and then got into C.B.C. Toronto. Spent the years from 1986 to 2000 there working in Business Affairs, Materials Management and Production Services. The last 8 years there were spent in Television Production on shows such as Hockey Night in Canada; Red Green; Mr. Dressup; a bunch of News and Current Affairs shows; Kurt Browning, Brian Orser and Elvis Stoyjko specials and 8 years on Royal Canadian Air Farce (my regular gig). I met my wife Laura on that last one and we were married in 1998. We bought a farm near Owen Sound and commuted twice a week to downtown Toronto. By 2000, Budget Cuts finally caught up to me and I was laid off. I started at Transcontinental Printing that fall and left there in 2008 to farm full time. We raise goats, cows and turkeys for sale and keep chickens, pigs and cows for our own use on our 100 acres south of Chatsworth. ...Expand for more
Laura's daughter (born in 1991) rides horses (as do Laura and myself) when she is not writing and recording her own music. We've been to Nashville twice now for studio sessions and her CD sounds really good. Her Producer is thoroughly convinced that she stands a really good chance of catching on to one of the major labels. Our son (born in 1999) is a real rough and tumble farm boy who loves to work with the animals and help with the haying every summer. Considering he is so little (compared to others his age), he's a pretty strong guy. I never dreamed that any of this would ever happen and if anybody had said that I would end up farming for a living I would have told them they were crazy. Film and Television were great to work in, the Printing Industry was interesting and doing the Music stuff now is also a blast but we won't trade our farm life away. My only regret is that I can't remember the formula for figuring out the volume for a partially filled cylinder so that I know how much fuel oil is left in my tanks for the tractors.
