Doug's Story

I’m originally from Hamilton, Ontario and lived in Stoney Creek, Burlington, Guelph, Don Mills and Kingston before moving to Alberta in 1979. The schools attended in Don Mills include Cassandra Public School, Milneford Junior High (Milne Valley now) and Victoria Park Secondary High School. He later attended Queen's University (Political Studies). I’ve worked only at the Government of Alberta, firstly with the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, then the Minister of Government Services, Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs and finallythe Minister of Social Services. He then went on to work in tourism for 11 years and finally 20 years with economic development loving what I do. My work saw me travel extensively, experience, learn and and really enjoy my role promoting Alberta. I recently retired with 40 years 6 months and one week of loyal, passionate and successful careers behind me in the Government of Alberta. I have lived in Alberta for 41 years; Edmonton for 37 and more recently Calgary. My wife Vera and I were married in Kananaskis Country, west of Calgary, beneath the gorgeous Alberta Rockies under the incredible blue sky in 2017. I moved here following University at Queen's to try a job I'd never thought I would find. My Hons. B.A. in Political Studies was initially because of my interest in politics. Inever expected or necessarily wanted to find employment in politics. However an opportunity to work in the Alberta Legislature brought me here. Nine years of the most interesting experiences, fantastic learning and dynamic challenges I could ever imagine...and lots of fun. Working under Peter Lougheed’s administration was an experience; a university education unto itself, that I am so grateful to have had. I’ve had some fascinating roles in my work and love life in Alberta. Although I have worked with the Alberta Government my whole career, I have been very fortunate to have had wonderful experiences, met some truly wonderful people and worked in and around the business community for most of this time. I never, ...Expand for more
ever thought I'd end up with a career in Government but it has been rewarding and a constant learning experience! Following my time in the Legislature as a political advisor, I worked for 10 years in Tourism Development, assisting with new business development and attracting tourism businesses to the Province. A great promotion gave me the opportunity and yet another wonderfully unique experience marketing Alberta in the United States, attracting new business and investment and people here to work. Lots of amazing travel experiences and a great network of folks across Alberta, Canada, the U.S. and even around the world. I have a wonderful wife (Vera), a daughter who's a neo-natal ICU nurse and a son who was golf club professional but with a wife and and two sons, he pivoted to the financial business in Saskatoon. I'm an avid photographer (professional work in a couple of speciailzed areas) and continue lots of sporting activities. I volunteer in a number of organizations for the fun of it and seem to Please be in touch if we know each other, or even if we don't. I'd love to hear your comments on my hobby - my photographs. My external interests include being with my family, (two children, 2 grandchildren) photography, visiting, walking, camping and hiking the Canadian Rockies, Volleyball, Hockey, Team Canada, the Oilers and travel. As a volunteer, I've worked political campaigns, been a member of Rotary, taught power skating and coached hockey for years. I have been to China, France, the U.K., Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Mexico and Belarus in addition to over 35 U.S. States. Most of my travel has been for business. My favorite quotes include: :""The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of childhood into maturity." - T. H. Huxley and 3 from Albert Einstein: "The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." , "I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious." and my favourite, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." I guess that affirms the dreamer in me eh? Cheers all, Doug

What, what. So it's a real maple leaf, even though it's in Riverside Park in Spokane, doesn't mean us Canaucks shouldn't be proud. Now this was a lot of fun to take. This angle is looking up into the tree, catching one l

Set up. Every year we try to do something to differentiate the trip from the year prior but also start a new tradition. A few years back it was martini's. Of course the Martini's should be served kinda like James Bond dri
