Doug's Story

I’m either in the end of the last third of my life or the end of the third fourth of my life. It’s a long story, but the short version follows. My life as I know it now consists of three parts; school, work, marriage. It’s also divided amongst states; New York, Texas, and Louisiana. My time in New York and Texas is approximately equal almost to the day. If there is to be a fourth, I’m not yet aware of what that is. I should also note that although I chose to divide the first three into school, work, and marriage there is overlap; for example I worked for my father while going to school, I attended graduate classes while working and I continued to work while married. So if there is a fourth period I would assume I’ll continue to be married while living where? The first is self-explanatory (and you were there also) birth, grade school, high school, and college all took place in New York State. The second; therein lies a tail between two cities. After graduation I was lucky enough to get a chance to go to space, or rather I spent the first quarter of my second third working at Johnson Space Center, in Houston for Lockheed and then a subsidiary Lockheed/EMSCO. The period was during the early Shuttle missions in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL). We supported testing for the early shuttle missions thru a collection of software/hardware simulators and emulators. During missions, we recorded live PCM data which could be replayed to help diagnose and resolve problems. I worked my first and only 36 hour shift during one of the mission critical events. During this period I also met the son of one of the astronauts you may know as Lord British. Sadly (for me) I never made it to space. I was however involved in a project for Lord British and Sierra On-line to convert Ultima from the Apple to the Atari. Four of us (Danny, Mark, Clyde, and I) formed a company (Sigma Micro Systems) to accomplish this task; unfortunately work and overtime scaled up at the same time. We completed the game albeit a little later than originally promised. Things were changing; my supervisor was retiring and the JSC contracts were going up for rebid as a sole site contract. Lockheed had recently won the KSC site contract and there was little or no chance they would also be awarded the site contract for JSC. About that time I received an offer for another job in Garland working for E-Systems which was later purchased by Raytheon. I spent the next seventeen years of my life working there. During that time I also did some travelling (both business and private) around the United States (crossed a few rivers and hiked back to waterfalls that not everyone gets a chance to see). Not much to say about my time there due to the classification level. I was a software developer developing control process applications, algorithms - initially sequential followed later by massively parallel across DSPs and or processors. Later as microprocessors became faster, similar algorithms and capabilities moved to SGI workstations and servers. SGI initially couldn’t compete from a bandwidth perspective but they were easier to maintain and adapt. Addendum: My first puppy was born in the red room in Las Vegas, Nevada. I helped bring him and his brothers and sisters into the world while visiting a friend. She gave him to me as a Christmas present that same year. A few months later I purchased a female to keep him company while I was at work. You can learn a lot from a puppy about yourself and the people around you. This was also the time of rock concerts, fast cars, and racing. Music was I big part of the first two thirds but has diminished during the third. Towards the end of this p...Expand for more
eriod I met my wife who was living in the New Orleans area and wanted to stay there. She kept promising me she would move to Garland if I couldn’t find a job the New Orleans area, but as each promised dead-line approached, she automatically extended it another three to six months. Eventually after two years I found a job and relocated to the New Orleans, Louisiana area and so began the third part of my life. I went to work for TANO who was purchased by L3 Communications shortly thereafter. I worked with microprocessors and real-time embedded applications. Towards the end I designed and implemented a proof of concept (POC) electric steering control system for the Zumwalt-class destroyer built by Bath Iron Works. Part of my implementation lives on in the current system or so I’ve been told. After ten years, during company reorganization I was laid off along with about 60% other local employees. I found a job at ION Geophysical and was laid off four years later when big OIL crashed. After a few months, I started what is probably my last job working for a Hospice and Palliative care software provider. My wife had an older dog that was a bit ornery but in general they (my dogs and hers) got along by mostly avoiding each other. My wife and I purchased a piece of land and built a house upon it. We survived Katrina and other hurricanes since then. Her dog and both of mine have since departed along with another we adopted after Katrina. He was found by one of our neighbors wandering the streets and chasing cars. We believe he was abused and abandoned by someone to get rid of him. He was terrified to go outside, and seemed afraid we wouldn’t let him back in. He was about two years old and wasn’t house-broke. He turned into a very special puppy both my wife and I became attached to. After he passed my wife purchased another puppy which is very much her puppy, also very special. All of our puppies were special to one or both of us, but only the last two were shared between us. My wife is originally from the Philippines and was working as a CPA when I met her. I traveled with her to meet her parents and siblings in the Philippines after we were married. Since we were married she has passed the bar exam and now also practices law in Louisiana. We have done some travelling in the United States, Canada, and Mexico (limited). Last year we traveled to the UK and Europe and had plans to see Ireland and Scotland this year until everyone closed their borders. Perhaps we’ll be able to go later this year. We also have plans to return to the Philippines sometime this year or next. She is building a house there and wants me to setup a network, security and surveillance systems. After I pass she plans to retire there or perhaps we’ll retire there together at some point. Since the virus has gone public, many other things have gone virtual. Earlier this year I came upon an opportunity to go to Mars, virtually. I obtained two boarding passes for the Mars 2020 mission which departed in July of 2020. My wife’s puppy Simon and I are on our way to Mars where our names will reside. While I don’t believe she would ever go if given the opportunity, I believe I still may. And while it’s also true she wouldn’t let me take Simon away from her, it’s virtually not a problem. It’s not all been rosy, we’ve had our problems and we’re both stubborn as mules. But we try to support each other and she takes good care of me and the puppies. What more can I ask? Perhaps I could ask for an understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum computers, which I’ve taken an interest in of late. In the quantum world I’m a fermion or introvert and share more in common with a Quark than a pion.
