Doug's Story

Life Wow! Has it been that long? Sitting down to write this was a challenge so I will keep it simple. I am now 46 - happily married with 3 x teenage children. We live in the suburbs north of Montreal where I also own and operate two small international freight forwarding businesses. Still play guitar and sing (now with my kids)and we're all going to the Eagles concert together in March 2005! Still ride a dirt bike on the weekends from spring to fall. Gave up skiing for snowboarding about 6 years ago and spend the weekends in the Laurentians from fall to spring! So far my life has been a melody of good luck and surprise and God willing, it will continue. Despite the move to Montreal in 1988, have managed to keep in touch with a number of good friends from Kleiburg, Woodbridge and Richmond Hill but would enjoy hearing from others. Not so much of the "bad-ass red-neck" or "hippy-wannabe" that I was in the '70's but still find my way to have a litte bit too much fun where ever I go! School Dropped out of grade 13 at Bayview. University life was cool as I just visited friends at York, Waterloo, Western, and Guelph - did the partying...not the studies. Went back to school at night and took industry related courses in transportation and interna...Expand for more
tional business. Not much more to report here. Workplace Directly after dropping out of grade 13 I turned my part time job as Lifegaurd/Swimming Instructor into a full time job at the Woodbridge-Vaughan Pool. Shortly thereafter starting working at the CN Yards in Concord which lead to career in the shipping business. Went back to school at night at Ryerson and completed 2 year CITT (Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation)program. Changed jobs a few times until I became a freight forwarder. Studied more night courses on world trade and transport. The firm I worked for in 1987 made me a partner and transfered me to Montreal in the summer of 1988. Funny thing: For those of you who may remember, I was an "artsy" kind of guy and in my last years of high school my worst subjects were French, Geography and Accounting. So, in 1988 here I found myself - 30 years old and an owner in a freight forwarding firm in Quebec!! Someone was getting even!! Anyway, that lasted 6 years and then I went out on my own in 1994 and started Renaissance International Freight Forwarding Inc with my wife as an equal partner. Three years later we started Renaissance (Ontario) Inc in Mississauga. Both companies are still growing and operating successfully!
