Doug's Story
I always loved biology and the sciences. Mr. Lyon was such an inspiration for me. After a very brief stint at Western Michigan Univ, I became a Spartan where I graduated in 1977 with a BS in Wildlife Biology and Management, plus a second major in Psychology. I spent a year or so working as a research biologist for the MDNR, but didn't like working for the government. My wife Sandy and I moved back to Rockford but quickly found a permanent home in the Lowell countryside. I went to work for Amway Corp in the Quality Assurance/R&D division. First in a lab, but when they found out I knew statistics, I got promoted to Sr. Quality Engineer where I acted as their statistician. They funded my continuing edu to become a programmer, where my boss and I wrote lots and lots of code to automate the division. I spent 7 years there designing new systems and was lured away by Waste Management to design the network and automation systems for a new lab. Alas, I didn't care for Chicagoland and after several months, moved back into our house in Lowell. Here I...Expand for more
started my first business. Personal networks were just becoming available and I was an early adapter.. I had a staff that could write code as well as configure these new networks. I had an opportunity to speak to national audiences a number of times, sharing some of the techniques we developed. Big fun! I sold the business and joined a firm that focused on high end computer consulting. I became a partner there and retired 12/31/13. Sandy and I started traveling to warm places after that during the winter and a few years ago we bought a townhouse in Cedar Key, FL. This past year, we decided to sell our Lowell home on 40 acres and move permanently to Cedar Key (~700 people). We are both active in the community and have developed many friends. Sandy has always been very crafty and sits on the board of the local arts council, and I fish whenever I can, We both love bluegrass music and have learned how to play instruments and always look forward to pick at festivals or just on the front porch. Life is good. We are so grateful for what we have.
