Doug's Story

With my grad photo in the 1963 yesrbook was the statement that I wanted to become a public school music teacher. Well, that is exactly what I am doing today. I am teaching in. Northern B.C. in a K-12 Public School and teaching music for students of all ages from 6-18. However, I did get my musical career started immediately following our graduation. Three days later I was on my way to Nova Scotia for the 7 Year Royal Canadian Navy Bandsman Apprenticeship Plan. In 1970, I returned to Courtenay and was immediately invited to teach music in the public schools there. During this very busy time, I did manage to find my way to attend UBC. As far as I know, I was the only former music student of Tom Pagdin and Al Wedel who did return to Teach music with them. After years of teaching in the elementary schools, I was moved to GP Vanier Secondary School where I worked with Tom and Al there for the next three years. Changes did occur when Highland Secondary School was opened in Comox. So, in 1978, I returned to the Canadian Forces Military Band Prifession and was posted to the Naden Band at Esquimalt, B.C. following that, in 1987, I was selected to become the ...Expand for more
Voluntary Band Instructor at C.F.B. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. This became an outstanding lifetime experience as, during my time, we developed an amazingly proficient band which became the largest military band in Canada. However, in 1991, I decided to retire from the Canadian Forces. Having already become a proficient Bandmaster, I was then approached by the Militia and I became the Ifficer and Director of Music fir the Saskatchewan District Militia Band in Regina. Well, the classroom was still calling me so I returned to the Public School Music Teaching Profession and have now been teaching musuc in public schools for more than 25 years since then. Al Wedel is still leading choirs in Comox He is also a recognized Ski Instructor at Mr. Washington, at age 89, and he tells me that in the field if teaching music to school age children - I have ou tlasted everyone.I am still youthful, energetic and dedicated to benefit young lives through the medium of teaching music. It is my goal to keep doing this as long as I can Since my first musuc teaching experience was in 1959 as a member of the Future Teacher’s Club, I have now been teaching music for 60 years!
