Doug's Story

After BHS I went to MGCCC and USA for civil engineering while working at the Natatorium along with a few dozen others in our class. I took a job with a small engineering company in Biloxi right after school, but I needed to move away to have any chance at a real career. I moved to Birmingham, Alamaba and worked for an A&E firm there and took some courses at UAB. After a few years an opportunity to relocate back to the Gulf Coast and to advance my career opened up so I moved to Pensacola and went to work for an engineering firm there. I switched firms once while in Pensacola and built my own house - which I dearly miss. After dating for a year or so I married Claire in 2005. She had a child from a previous marriage so I now have a daughter (7 years old now). While we loved Pensacola, when my wifes job situation changed (she worked remotely for a large software consulting firm) we had to relocate. We ended up moving to the Seattle area and my wife now works for Micro...Expand for more
soft while I work for a mid-sized engineering firm. We initially rented a house in Issaquah near lake Sammamish but in the summer of 2008 we bought a house in the Ames Lake area of Redmond, Washington. We like it here, but the fall/winter/spring can be VERY grey and a misty rain falls virtually every day. You can go months without actually seeing the sun - which I hate. I miss afternoon thunderstorms and lightning, I miss the beach, and I miss being closer to family. But living here has its benefits - we are just outside of Seattle so we go to Mariners games, Seahawks games, can be at a ski resort in 20 minutes during the winter (or a two hour trip gets you to Whistler), there are countless parks, festivals, concerts (saw Eddie Izzard, Chris Rock, and Dave Attell this year), and plenty of other things to do. So if you can tolerate the greyness for half of the year and if you can live without the fresh gulf seafood (really hard for me) this is a great place to live.
