Doug's Story
New Career at age 62
With the housing market collapsing in fall 2008,I had to search for a new opportunity, and that came in looking back to where I'd started my career, at the National Park Service. I was looking, they were hiring, and a match was made! I am amazed how much I am enjoying the work and my colleagues, after 30 years as a lone wolf. My projects are all over the west, and I get to visit national parks about once a month, and get paid for it!
College
What a wonderful time college was! I'm not sure how I got out of Penn with a degree, given the extent of my extracurriculars, but I did. High points: 3 years with the fine fellows of Mask & Wig, Religious Thought courses, a year with the Daily Pennsylvanian, Neil Welliver's drawing course, a couple years with Penn Comment magazine, and four years of associating with the gentlemen of Phi Ep. Despite my professors' advice to go into cartooning, not architecture, I went on to Columbia for arch. school.

mall architectural practice (in its 30th year) specializing in residential remodeling. We help people realize their dreams for their homes. If you want to see the kind of things we do, do a search on the web for "Doug Walter Architects".
Prior to starting my business, I had put in 2 1/2 years for the feds, in the Interior Department as an historical architect; prior to that, a year with the Denver Urban REnewal Authority inspecting homes, and a year and a half designing commercial rehab and restoration for Larimer Square.
I write on design and housing topics for some of the trade magazines, give talks, and enjoy being at this stage in my career.
Perhaps my greatest job pleasure is, starting two years ago, some of the pro bono projects I've done for Habitat, Easter Seals, and the Home Builders Foundation, for people who aren't asking for much. My normal work environment is dealing in abundance, it is grounding to deal with people in great need at the same time.
I have no interest in ever retiring, and with my daughter an artist and my son a poet, don't think I'll ever have the option!
