Doug's Story
As far as my life story, I've never sat down and thought about the where's, the why's and the what the heck was I thinking, but I'll give it a shot....
After high school I joined the Navy. My first tour of duty was at Whidbey Island and I was back in Spokane almost every weekend partying. Needless to say, I was a bit disillusioned of what the Navy was all about.
After 3 years at Whidbey, I reenlisted to get stationed in Hawaii and become an aircrewman and fly on the Navy's P-3 (a patrol plane used to track and neutralize submarines). This was quite an adventure. During my first year of being there, we deployed to the Philippines for 6 months. While on deployment I got to see not only the Philippines but Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and a tiny little archipelago called Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It was quite an eye opening experience. Seeing how other people in the world lived and learning some of their " life values" made me realize just how lucky I was.
During my second deployment, I met my wife Nancy. She worked at the Baskin-Robbins that was on the base in the Philippines. We dated for the whole six month deployment. When I got back to Haw...Expand for more
aii I applied for a fiance visa and Nancy and I were married in April of 1983.
After we got married I continued my Navy career and we moved between Hawaii, the Philippines and Guam. We also had 3 girls along the way. Norma (1985), Natalie (1986) and Natasha (1992). We also adopted my sister-in-law Lynn, shortly after we were married when my mother-in-law passed away. She was only 4 at the time. All 4 girls have attended U-Hi. Our youngest will be a junior next year.
I retired from the Navy in 1996 and moved back to Spokane. I started working for Itronix within a month of retiring. (Military retirement only pays for the mortgage). I've been there for the last 12 years. My wife has worked out at Fairchild Airbase since we moved here also. She has been working in Afghanistan off and on for the last two and a half years. She gets to come home every 3 months but I think she's just trying to pay me back for my years in the Navy.
Overall, not too many regrets. Every now and then I run the "what if's" through my mind and dream but I try to limit them to one a week.
Anyway, that's my life (not much of a) story. I look forward to reading more about some other Titan buddies.
