Doug's Story
After attending Texas Technological College and acquiring a B.S. in physics, worked for Shell Oil Company for only a short period of time because of the Vietnam war. During the war, I was in the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine Seawolf, SSN 575. (You may remember the draft you by your birthday lottery in May of 1968. My birthday was number 6 that night, and I decided to join the navy rather than slog through the rice patties in Vietnam.) After military duty, worked for several companies that design, build and operate nuclear power plants, including senior management and ownership in three companies. I have been an independent consultant for most of the last 25 years, working in Europe for over 12 years in Lyon, France; Vienna, Austria; Offenbach, Germany; and Ukraine at Chernobyl and Kiev. Did weapons of mass destruction (WMD) work for the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. Was responsible for regulatory affairs and nuclear and radiation safety at Chernobyl (after the accident) for projects funded by the G7 associated with the exploded reactor. Co-managed the U.S. International Nuclear Safety Program that upgraded the sa...Expand for more
fety culture and equipment for 64 Soviet-designed reactors. Lived in the Caribbean on St. Croix, U.S.Virgin Islands, for 3 1/2 years (great time). Am currently living in Germany, Bingen am Rhein - 50 miles west of Frankfurt, 1-hour drive from the French border and on Whidbey Island in WA, about 80 miles of Seattle. We travel back and forth between Germany and the US about every three months. Have enjoyed mountain climbing in South America (Ecuador and Argentina); the Swiss, Italian and German alps; the U.S. Pacific Northwest; in northern California and in the Mt. Everest region of Nepal. Highest climb exceeded 22,800 feet. Also enjoy world travel, scuba diving, international affairs, playing guitar and learning about new cultures and countries. Throughout my many years of travel, I have spent time (more than in the airport) in more than 30 countries. Have varying capability in several foreign languages. My wife is fluent in four languages (Russian, Ukrainian, English and German); plus, she reads Latin and some Egyptian hieroglyphics. She was my Russian teacher at Chernobyl and enjoys hiking, traveling and learning about ancient civilizations.
