Douglas's Story

Worked for City Market for 20 years (1981 to 2001). 4.5 years in Cortez, 6 mos. worked around Colorado for Management Training, and 15 years in Shiprock,NM. Management in certain departments. Got married in 1989, have three children. all girls (20,17,12). Moved to Shiprock in 1996. After leaving City Market, worked as a security guard at BHP Navajo Mine for about 9 mos. June 2002, went to work at Navajo Tribal Utility Authority as a Meter Reader, been there for the past seven years. May 2011; We became grandparents in April, our first. Hailey Virginia Jim, born on the 25th of April. February 2016; Updating my story. Still working at NTUA in Shiprock. Working in electric services, will be finishing up my apprenticeship for electrician by end of June. Really enjoying my job. Been with the company 13 years. Married 26 years. Laura is working at Northern Navajo Medical Center as a Dental Assistant. She's been there for 5 years. Danielle 26, our oldest daughter is working at City Market as a cashier. Has two daughters. Hailey 4 and Dahlia 4 months. She graduated from Shiprock High in 2007. Went to Dine' College for two years. Ran Cross Country for the college. Won the National championship in 2008. Lisa 24 and Shante 18, our other two daughters are both working for Americorp. They work with veterans around the Shiprock area. Both graduated from SHS, Lisa in 2010 and Shante in 2015. April 2019; still living and working in Shiprock, I'm a journeyman electrician now for 3 years. Still enjoying my work. I'll be with the company 17 years in June. We do a lot of service entrance meterloops for mobile homes, service entrance inspections, pump house maintenance and troubleshoo...Expand for more
ting, PV solar unit set-ups and maintenance, and we occasionally assist the Electric Line with outages. Most rewarding is giving electric service to the elderlies, that lived out in the remote areas of the Navajo Nation for most of their lives. We are actually working on a project called "Light Up Navajo". We have volunteer Electrical Companies coming in and doing power line construction. My wife, Laura and I will be celebrating our 30 year Anniversary in June. We'll be doing our usual annual fishing/camping trip to Vallecito, north of Bayfield. Laura is still working at the Medical Center here in Shiprock, in the Dental Clinic. She's been there 8 years now. Our girls are all doing fine; Danielle is 29, Lisa 27 and Shante 21, They're working and taking classes at San Juan College. We have 3 grandkids now; Hailey will be turning 8 yrs old this month. Dahlia is 3 yrs old now. And our grandson Tobias Aldon is 2 yrs old. Tobias was born with a condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome. He is doing fine, we're all learning sign language with him. He'll be starting school this fall. We'll be back in Arriola during the July 4th weekend, for a Family Reunion. I miss that place, its been about 35 years since we moved from there. Its always nice to go back and spend a couple days there. 12/07/2020 Happy Holidays, Glad to announce we are grandparents again, Our youngest daughter had a boy on November 9, 2020 at 7pm. Greyson Oliver Steven Cota 6 lbs 4 oz, 19.5" This is our fourth grand child. We have two girls and two boys now... Hailey Jacqueline Jim, 9 (Danielle) Dahlia Quinn Jim, 5 (Danielle) Tobias Aldon Jim, 4 (Lisa) Greyson Oliver Steven Cota, 5 weeks (Shante)
