Douglas's Story
In January, 1967, I left Sequoia during our Senior year and enlisted in the U.S. Army. During military service: I was trained as a Combat Engineer... and served a one year tour of duty in Vietnam with the 23rd "Americal" Infantry Division. I experienced combat and was wounded twice, once in January '68 during the Vietnamese Tet Lunar New Year Offensive, and once again in September during an ambush by North Vietnamese Army regulars. During treatment for that wound, it was found that I had also contracted malaria. During my final year of enlistment, I served as an instructor of infantry tactics, completed my high school education and passed several Civil Service job placement examinations. Do I regret my time in the service? No. I often wonder however, how things might have turned-out differently, if I'd waited until I finished H.S.
During the next fifteen years, I battled with PTSD and alcoholism. I managed however, to get married in 1974, have three sons, earn two Associate Degrees in Police Science and Business Administration, and a Bachelor degree in Business Management. stry and professional engineer licenses / certifications. Note: I stopped drinking in 1984, but like many other Vet's, I still periodically suffer with PTSD.
My vocational career included engineering and management positions with a number of manufacturing and fabrication companies, including Raychem, Westinghouse, Northrop Grumman, CoorsTek and Essco Corporations. I ended a thirty-eight year career as the Operations Manager and CEO of Liberty Machine, Inc. in Fremont, CA, and as a self-employed small business consultant.
We moved from our the Bay Area home in Fremont in 2006, to our foothills home in Mariposa; close to Yosemite N.P. and within the Sierra National Forest. Since the move, we've done a lot of volunteer work and have both held part time positions with Mariposa County's School District, Health Services and the Sheriff's Juvenile Probation Department. Mostly, however, we're just enjoying the quiet life, the great outdoors, and our visits here and there with our three sons and their families, including our eight grandchildren: four girls and four boys, ranging in age from four to twenty-five. Life's Good.
