Douglas's Story
08/2020 UPDATE:
I was from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, born and raised. 🤓
I attended HSoA&D from 1980 to around 1983. I lost my sight then and gave up on school. Art is a visual thing. They (guidance counselor, Mrs. Miller) wanted me to attend a school for the blind. I just dropped out, instead. I never saw anyone from school again. 😥
I regained my eyesight at 21. I got my GED from South Carolina while moving back to where my parents had retired to live. I came back to NYC and started being a regular person (smile). Art & Design made me feel special and privileged —especially , since I was coming from the “hood.”
I would lose my sight again at 23 for another year. By some miracle of surgery, I had regained my eyesight in one eye. But the thrill of creating art was already gone by then. 😔
2015:
i was in the gifted and talented program for 7th (7 G 1) and 8th grade (8 G 1). Ms. Freeman was my eighth grade teacher and Mr. Williams was my 7...Expand for more
th grade teacher. Mr. Givens (science teacher/guidance counselor) used to walk through the hallways cracking MFs with a mini bat. I'm trying to remember the name of the Prinicipal. Damn! i think it was Mr. Johnson (well i'm sure it was mr. johnson, i just forget his full name).
best friends were Darren Taylor and Roger Chandler
i'll try to remember some classmates' names.
most won't remember me because we were separated from the so-called "average" students because we were supposedly gifted and talented. what a crock! i am surprised that any of us are alive that were subjected to this privileged treatment. but i must commend my teachers for their diligence, sacrifice and caring because their method of instruction and learning was phenomenal and has prepared me for this day. thank you.
I always wanted to be a n architect when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was an ambitious idea. As it turns out, they were somehow wrong..
