Douglas's schools include Anoka High School. Douglas later received an undergraduate degree in math from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in math from Stanford University. After two years as an assistant professor at Carnegie-Mellon University, Douglas moved to Maryland and has been working for the U.S. Department of Defence from 1975 to the present. Interests include playing the bagpipes, Scottish country dancing, woodworking, bagpipe making and old house restoration. Living in an 18th century plantation house with wife, Ruth. Two children (adults now) and four grand children.
