Douglas's Story

Life I attended Purdue for 2 years before succumbing to deep depression. Because this was at the height of Viet Nam, I avoided the draft by joining the Air Force Reserves. In 1973 I married Barb Richen and we moved to Colorado Springs in February of 1978 (didn't want our tombstones to read born, raised, and died in Cincinnati). While there I became interested in motorcycles and was elected president of a local motorcycle touring club. Other hobbies included fishing and theology which led me to teach some very different Sunday school classes for adults. After raising two wonderful children (which, like many of you, I could go on about for days), Barb decided she wanted "greener pastures" with a mutual friend from our church. This double betrayal was very painful and I still feel the twinges of that hurt from time to time. However, seeing a chance to restart my life and correct a few regrets I finished my Bachelors degree and now am looking forward to some new adventures. To that end, I started a new job on May1, 2007 for a multi-national machine tool manufacturer based in Rapid City, SD. On June 9th I was re-married to a wonderful woman with 3 children still living at home (we met on eHormony). Two weeks after that my mom passed away back in Cincinnati. Needless to say, it has been a crazy new millennium. But, we are settling in now and if you are ever in the Black Hills of SD give us a holler. Sturgis is only 30 minutes away. School There was no Jr. Hi at the time, so I spent 6 years at Covedale Elem. and 6 years at West Hi. All of those years are filled with great memories, but the last 4 at West Hi were especially fun. I suppose I could have focused a bit more on my studies, which can be important, but high school is more about discoverin...Expand for more
g yourself and how you fit into the world than it is about mastering the world's knowledge. Some of my fondest memories include playing Krompus (sp?) at Christmas for the all German classes (stumbling into a French class by mistake) Another time (as a German 4 student) I was recruited as an unwilling substitute teacher in German 2. That was way too awkward because most of the students were my 12th grade peers. But, revenge was sweet as I made the recital tapes for the oral exams. No second year student could ever hope to match a fourth year for verbal speed. College After a couple of years at Purdue, I realized I had gone because I was expected to and not because I wanted to. It was not exactly like that, but my memories are pretty much ¿Animal House¿ in nature. Unable to find a focus, major depression ensued and I dropped out. The nick-name Zero didn't help. Among my fondest memories are inaugurating the "winter nude Olympics", throwing the Delta house anchor into the Wabash, and the guys of Cary Quad NW 1st floor East. Later, I took a couple courses at University of Cincinnati, but couldn't bring myself to follow through. 30 years later I got my bachelors in IT. Workplace My career has focused mainly on manufacturing and machinery automation. This has led to some interesting Travel around the US, Canada and Japan Major Highlights: *5yr Cincinnati, Inc. - Production Electrician *12yr Denver Equipment ¿ Equipment/Facilities Maintenance (specializing in CNC) *12yr Industrial Controls and Automation - Owner/Operator/Designer (machine tool repair and manufacturing automation) *3yr Action Machinery Int'l - Regional Machine Tool Dealer - Service Manager *2yr Accurpress America - Multi-National Machine Tool Manufacturer - Service Manager
