Douglas's Story

Career: Retired in 2018 due to the discovery of Esophageal Cancer. Had Chemotherapy, Radiation treatments then 5 surgeries in Dec. 2019 - Jan 2020. Removal of gall bladder, some Esophagus & stomach. Almost died 2x but saved by the doctors. Unfortunately last week, Oct.12/21 a CT Scan discovered a new cancerous tumor in my Esophagus. Will update after seeing the Thoracic Surgeon.🤞🏻🙏🏻 Previous Entry: So here we are in the fall of 2015 & another year is getting ready to close. Had an awesome video shoot up in Garibaldi Provincial Park, BC at the Elfin Lakes area. Great video of a Mamma bear & her two cubs, as well as the amazing volcanic formed scenery of that part of BC. Definitely will be doing more video shoots in 2016 in BC & can't wait. In the meantime will be heading up to Squamish in November for the annual massive Bald Eagle migration to that area. Will post pictures of them on my Profile. Was quite busy since August 2011 to now, doing Live Music Video productions. It was really good to be back in the music scene with my Video Production company. But as usual in that industry, a lot of flakes spoiled it & I will be dialing back on the "non-profitable video shoots", with "wannabes" who have no money to pay a video production company. Went to the Mayan Riviera & Cancun to relax & did some filming for my Video Production company, Dreamwave Media last March 2010 & will be producing a travel video of that. Decided to semi-retire so I can pursue my Videography career with my company Dreamwave Media. It was time to do what I want to do in life, with time at a premium in life & not wanting to have too many regrets. But still work at Home Depot until my debts are paid off. Have done Corporate & wedding Videos & will continue to do so. But now I'm developing a Video series called "Exploring BC" as I explore the incredible mountains & vista of this incredible province. This is taking me on adventures that are breath taking in their vistas & excitement. So as mentioned I've had Grizzly Bear Video Expeditions, to video the grizzly bears up in the Bute Inlet area of BC three times. At one point I was standing only 30 feet away from a 600 pound male grizzly as I videotaped them & photographed them. That was one of the most memorable experiences of my life so far. So I'll keep returning to film them & also work on completing a documentary & devoting a portion of my company website to expose the struggle here in BC, to stop the trophy hunting of these majestic kings of the BC forests. Busy guy but wouldn't any other way. My "old" regular full time job from 1987 to 2010 was as an Operations Analyst in Vancouver,BC. at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Sam (my son) & I were up in Whistler every week all November '09 through to March, 2010, filming world class snowboarders & skiers for my own Video Production company Dreamwave Media Inc.. What a blast we had! Will be editing the HD Video footage & incredible photos after I finish several live Music Video Productions I'm working on presently. You should check out my Facebook page & then link to my Dreamwave Media Inc. Facebook page for lots of incredible photos & a quick video clip. Life: My Kids & Myself Both are doing well out of High school now and working fulltime. My son Sam is an IT Tech with Fraser Valley Health Authority since 2006. My daughter Rebekah is a Senior Insurance Specialist with Intact Insurance Canada. My son Sam is 37 and my daughter Rebekah is 36. (As of Oct/21) Sam is still working at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority's & Fraser Valley Health authority's Main Data Centre at Vancouver General Hospital as an Operations Analyst. We worked there together from 2006 to 2010. That was when I decided to take early retirement & change my career path December 1st, 2010. Since then I was semi-retired, worked part-time to balance out my drop in income & worked with my video production company Dreamwave Media Inc. But now fully retired due to Cancer. Bekah is in insurance & got her Broker's License a few of years back year. She's a Senior Claims Adjustor now but she's also planning on going to University for her BA in Environmental Studies. They grow up so bloody fast but both have managed to become level headed young adults. The fact I love most is that they both lived with me (as a single Dad) since 1998 and I have their respect and love. Sam & Bekah are now on their own in their own apartments. Bekah just bought a condo last month (Sept./21) In Jan.2012 my long time common-law wife of 9.5 years asked for a separation (life likes kicking you where it's primitive). But you have to move on no matter what life throws at you. Best decision I made was to move out & enjoy life as a retired, single, happy old fart. School The teacher that inspired me the most in high school wit...Expand for more
hout a doubt was Ernie Taylor, my art teacher. In my opinion he was an artistic genious whose talents were under appreciated. The pain of his personal torment over the loss of his children and wife in a fire haunted him for the rest of his life. That is what held him back I beleive from becoming one of Canada's foremost artists of his time. Canada's loss was our gain at West Ferris because of his coming to teach there. He brought me out of my shell and nourished my talent as an artist, for that I am so grateful to him. Unfortunately his death will prevent me from ever letting him know how much I appreciated him. As for favourite crush. Well I won't go there being as there really wasn't a "favourite" since there were so many young attractive girls in our school. Then there was the partying. Mark McWha's house was an absolute blast when his parents went away on their holidays. That was when we partied hard but always repsected the house of his parents and never damaged it but man did we have great times. One of my funniest moments was when a rock band we had started was rehearsing under the main auditorium. We had been given permission to rehearse on a Saturday afternoon and I was all set up with my drums on a riser and we had the guitars and horn section wailing away as well. As I recall we were in the middle of the Rolling Stones "Jumping Jack Flash" when Wally Soroka, the Vice Principal comes running red faced through the door furious at us. We were stunned & told him the teachers name who gave us permission. He calmed down & explained that the Ontario Science Fair awards show was going on right above us & that when we were playing it was like we were on the stage up there! Completely drowning out the announcers and in fact the judges had even given up & were dancing to our music on stage. Wally had troubles finding where we were but did simmer down once he found out what was going on. College Recently finished a Langara College Documentary Film Production course & getting connected for funding for 4 documentaries I have ready to be produced. Went to the Ontario College of Art in Toronto right after High School. But there was a "revolution" going on at the College with the students revolting against the curriculum that was being forced at them in the first two years of their 4yr program. This really spoiled things at that time. The CBC did a documentary on the Revolution at the Ontario College of Art in the early 1990's & it was only then that I realized how much it had impacted my decision to leave the College. They were basically rehashing things that Ernie Taylor had taught me in high school the previous five years. So off I went to Rock & Roll & the school of "Hard Knocks"..see my Life section of my bio. But in 1985, with my son just born & my daughter on the way, I decided to get with it, went back to college & took up Computer Operations. At the time I was designing & building a recording studio for a Record Production Company in Vancouver & computers were starting to be used in the recording studios. So I had to research the computers installation requirements for the studio & saw quickly that this industry was about to become huge. Realizing again that the owner of the Recording Studio was using me, just like my art endeavours, I left for College. Got a really good job in computers within 6 months of being in the school & have never looked back since. Music Career: But I did spend some time singing & drumming in rock bands & art work after high school in the 70's, 80's & 90's. At first I hit Art college right after high school, unprepared for the TO. & got wrapped up in sex, drugs & the rock & roll industry. Therefore wasting what Ernie Taylor, my high school art teacher, had taught me as I travelled around in bar bands. But man did I have a blast touring with bands around Ontario & then BC. First drumming & then switched to Lead singing, where I really shone, wouldn't change it at all. Met some famous musicians along the way from INXS, The Headpins, The Payolas, David Bowie's guitarist & bass player, The Stray Cats, Highway 101 etc. Over the years I did do work as an artist & as a cartoonist for a small paper out here on the West Coast. But I was basically getting ripped off all the time. Also did t-shirt designs, again for peanuts. Then I did wall murals but again getting ripped off. You're starting to see a pattern here of how people don't really appreciate artist's & musician's work here in western society. They look at artists as lazy bums unless you become very successful or have a piece of paper from a college that says "Doug's an artist". Then & only then, will they give you respect & financial remuneration. That forces so many artists & musicians to end up stifling their talents & then pursuing a career path that goes against their natural inclinations.

The best comparison that I can come up with for this surgery is this. I was in a big Bowie knife 🔪 fight & lost with four stab wounds to the gut. Because that is basically what happened bu
