Douglas's Story
I don't want to brag or make anyone jealous, but even after 40 years, I can still fit in the socks I wore in High School : )
Time to change this profile....
I met my wife just after Valentine's Day in '93, married her in November of '95 (and yes, we're still married, after nearly 28 years), will be come Guy Fawkes Day 2023.
After my near fatal accident in May of '85 (funniest thing about that was, around 4 weeks into my 5 week coma, the doctors sat my mom and dad down and told them point blank "Mr. and Mrs. Story, with the length of this coma combined with his physical injuries, IF your son wakes up, he's likely going to be a vegetable". That just didn't work for me, I HATE vegetables, lol,
Anyway, I got rehabbed and since I don't much care for being around people, I got my CDL and have been a commercial truck driver since November of '95 (being a Meyers-Briggs ISTJ, I just love being alone in the truck). In connection with that, I was working delivery for Thos Somerville in Fairfax, taking a commercial water heater up to Frederick, MD.
The water heater slipped off the liftgate and as I tried to catch it, the damned thing fell on the same leg I'd broken in '85 (tibia [shin bone] this time though), the doctor told my wife my leg was basically crushed into paste, but he put it back together using two titanium plates and 13 screws (the ONLY metal in me, even after all my previous accidents).
My leg healed straight and I STILL don't limp even though the same leg has been broken twice (sa...Expand for more
me area too, just above the ankle).
Got rehabbed and took a job with VDOT in November of '05, stayed there a little better than 7 years until I fell off a truck and tore my right rotator cuff for the 4th time, burned through my short term disability and long term disability and STILL was unable to return to full duty, so that job ended (wow, seems like I'm kinda accident prone, huh)?
So now, as I edit this on 04 Nov 2021 at 1224 hours, amidst this China virus nonsense, I'm still driving trucks (but with my skills, age, and level of pre-existing injuries that's ALL I do, I drive).
Got my class A in 2014, with the intent of driving my own tractor trailer (but no one would hire me to drive for them without a year's experience OTR (Over the Road) and I'm unwilling to go OTR because of my wife's health and I just plain like being home too much (previously been accused of being a homebody). The DOT (Department of Transportation) had me over a Catch -22 barrel, but in late 2021, somebody hired me to drive their rig, that ended and I've been driving for EF Thompson hauling mail since September of 2022.
Would love to be able to leave this overpriced area (likely only gonna happen after I retire completely though, gonna head for Texas, Mississippi, or back to Florida).
We don't like travel so we haven't gone anywhere, seen or done anything worthy of note. So it appears we're boring old folks before we got to be boring old folks.
That's it for now, see y'all at one of the future reunions...maybe
