Douglas's Story

I have lived all over the country doing a lot of different types of work. I was injured on the job in 1991 and since have basically had to retire. During my retirement I became very bored, and joined the local Volunteer Fire Dept. I went on to Mohave Community College and became an EMT. One yr. later I went back to the same college and spent a yr. and became a Paramedic with both Az. State and Federal Certification. I also taught EMT classes at the community college and Ford Proving Grounds and many other Fire Departments. I became a Captain on the Fire Dept. and head of Emergency Medical Services covering approximately 270 sq. miles of desert. I live in a very rural area where patients are seldom transported by ground and usually used DPS air support. I retired from the Fire Dept. after five years. I now spend most of my time at home, we have a small house on 2 1/2 acres and raise Chinese Shar Pei. Generally we have anywhere between 13 and 21 dogs at any given time. You can see some of my dogs at Desert Moon. I love my Shar Pei, they are the most unique creatures God placed on this earth. Their intelligence in uncanny, to the point of being eerie at times. I have imported dogs from as far away as Brazil to get away from all the inbreeding going on in the U.S. Through my dogs I became friends with a Marine Corp General. He and his wife have been to our home at least twice a year for the past several years. They will be purchasing two Shar Pei from us next summer. The General (sorry I can't use his name as some may take this as an endorsement and may cause him problems from his superiors) is currently in Iraq with his tour ending in May 2009. He honored me with a medallion and a flag that flew over his H.Q. in Iraq along with a certificate of authenticity. Since I am a former Marine I am thrilled to have him for a friend. I love the winters here in the desert but the ...Expand for more
summers can be quite miserable. We have had five days since early June where it was under 100 degrees. We live 40 miles west of Kingman Az. just 17 miles from the Ca. border. I often go to Las Vegas not to gamble but that is the nearest major airport to us and I ship my puppies from there. Most of our puppies either go to the east coast or Ca. I also go out in the desert and do dry panning for gold, there are quite a few working gold mines in the area. I have yet to find a nugget of any size but have found flower gold. It is real fine and it's beauty is stunning. I have a Polaris 4 WD quad and use that to run around the desert in. I stay in the washes mainly as I do not like to tear up the desert. We have quite a bit of wildlife here, not like Mn. though. I have seen only one deer in 11 yrs. I see things like lizards, all varieties, gila monsters and rattle snakes are abundant out here. There is one species of rattle snake called a Mohave Green, it is a hybrid cross between the western diamond back and the sidewinder. They are nasty tempered and aggressive and they will actually chase people when angered. I do not harm the snakes or anything as I feel everything has a purpose and they lived here long before man. There are many coyote out here and an occassional wolf. Our home is surrounded by mountains and we live in a big valley. There has been reports of Javelina hogs and Mountain lions although I have never actually seen either. I also play guitar, bass and keyboards for my own pleasure. My dogs do the vocals, probably better than I could do anymore. There is no one close to even jam with unfortunately so it's a one man band. I enjoy it though, it would be nice to be performing again but who would want to see an old geezer like me on stage so that's pretty much on the back burner. Well now that everyone can read how boring life can be I will close for now. Doug
