Douglas's Story

Traveled a lot, had quite a few successes and few failures. When I left WRHS in '64, I left a few good friends behind. I took nothing away with me (left year books at home with Mom and Dad who promptly 'lost' them) mainly because I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to return (don't forget, Viet Nam was hotly involved in a sort-of war. Bounced around in the CG, including 5 months in Viet Nam in '67/'68 (got an extended TDY assignment instead of transfer). Got out of the Coast Guard in June of '68 in Washington State and went to work installing Central Office Switches for non-Bell telephone companies.. Soon discovered that, in a way, I didn't come all the way back from 'Nam (took close to 15 years to fully recover). I hate to say it but there were a lot of us riding that same bus. Some of my best military 'shipmates' (buddies) are still in VA Hospitals. I do keep in touch but it its doubtful they will ever be recovered enough to really go home. Had a successful career in Data Processing. I spent 45+ years doing about every job there is (programming, operations, installation, sales, consulting, etc.) and saw a wide range of systems and software I had the distinct pleasure of either helping to build, install, configure, and/or operating it. Even worked for IBM at the last (major dream of mine). Enjoyed that part of my career a lot. I had to retire while at IBM due to health reasons. Not that it matters much, but I am a Stroke Survivor (Nov. 2004) and have lost the use of my left arm and walk funny. ;-) I now work with Non-Profit Agencies and Thrift Stores by refurbishing PCs t...Expand for more
hat are acquired via donation and surplus sources. Currently, I work with the Virginia State Eastern Shore Literacy Council by providing hardware and software support. The systems I rebuild are used to teach reading skills to non-readers and English (ESL) to migrant workers . I also do a bit of mentoring when I can. Don't make any money out of all that, but it sure is gratifying to see the results. Had a couple failed marriages, two wonderful daughters, and lost one to an auto accident in '95. The oldest is a Pharmacy Secretary for a major Hospital in Tulsa, OK. Now, I am married to a wonderful woman and living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I do miss my old friends (at least we all got that way; old that is), but I haven't forgotten any of you! I enjoy going to Ren Fests and Highland Games, Dressing up in my Kilt and meeting up with friends for good food, drink, and chat. I also make pottery (Single Handed Potter) and make bowls, tiles, mugs, and such (yes, I use a potters wheel) and have had some of my pottery shown in Judged Shows here in Virginia. Not too bad for a guy that only has one working hand. ;-) Our household here includes 2 cats (Cali and Gracie) who do their level best to keep me company. The latest addition to my life is a Puppet Ministry. I now have a fairly wide selection of people and animal puppets that are seeing increased use in some of the churches here. Fun! I am also writing a book that will hopefully be published in a couple years if it goes well. I live a simple life, have a lot of good friends, and generally enjoy what each day brings.
