Douglas's Story

Born on a Navy Base in Chincoteague VA, the home of Misty the horse (author: Marguerite Henry). Oldest child of Richard McFarlin and Pauline (nee: Allen). I have 4 brothers and a baby sister (Steven, David, Martin, Timothy, Joan). Became a Baha'i on my birthday in 1966 believing in God's revelation is passed down progressively over many years as mankind grows, much like someone goes to school and progresses his/her knowledge one grade at a time. Was the first class to attend all 3 years when Mayo Senior High School opened in 1967, graduating with a general diploma in 1969 during the Vietnam War era and Woodstock. That year moved to Chicago to attend DeVry Institute of Technology achieving an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Met my future wife on May 5, 1970 walking hme from school and fell head over heals in Love with her. When I call my Mom on Mothers day Mom heard a girl in the back-ground and Mom asked about Jan, both Mom and Dad were relieved because up till that time I wasn't interested in girls, they were jsut wondering if I was ever going to . . . . By the end of August that same year we were blistfully married with a Baha'i ceremony in Rochester. Survived by two sons (Brent/Chris) and four grandchildren (Charlie, Kate, Brent Jr, and Hope). Wife was pregnate and was unable to land a job in electronics in Rochester going back to Chicago were I stated as a technician at Nortrup Grumman DSD (1972) in Paletine IL,, their primary customer was the military Air Force designing radar and infrared jammers, worked there for 17 years leaving as an Associate Design Engineer. Late summer of 1977, Jan and I started self-building a home in Round Lake IL under an FHA234 morgage approach. Worst idea, mortage was bought down in the first two years with the belief that the home owner would be getting raises each year, as it turned out it was the Carter years where interest rates sky rocketed, there were gas lines, home sales died. Ended up with 2 mortages for about 1+ years and in the end sold the home at a loss in 1989. Oh but we had such good memories their with the kids and Jan's BFF from high school Bernice. Got our first camper trailer, gutted it out to refurbish, I had opened up the walls and when Jan stepped inside to show Bernice what I was doing I turned to them and told them to get out now, they got mad but afterward I told them there was a bee's nest willing the entire wall vertical section. Bernice and Nick later bought their camper and came to the house to visit but did not come in till 2:00AM, we knew they were coming so left the door inlocked, when they came inside Sandy (collie) greeted and let them in without a bark. Any stranger that ever came to the door she would basically ...Expand for more
attack the glass showing her teeth. We got a camp site in Fort Atkinson WI spending a lot of time going there, Janice liked the golf cart the best, kids hated the tent, but good memories still. Had a short move to Texas, none of the family liked the move and within 1 year moved back to Wisconsin. Got a job with Conveter Concepts Inc. in Pardeeville designing commercial power supplies. This is where Jan and I started self-building another home. Some really good memories with that home. One in particular was making the basement a complete mess comming up with a special Xmas gift for Charlie and Kate, they had so many toys and no place to put them so Jan and I built a 4 section train toybox. Chris completed Pardeeville High school in 1994. Moved to Milwaukee in 1996 working for then Eaton NCD later sold and renamed DRS Power & Control Technologies Inc. There I was primary designer for a modular house-keeping DC power supply capable of delivering 1200W and able to be sourced by two separate isolated sources of power. Also worked on electric drives, power distribution equipment, and power conversion equipment used on Navy Air Craft Carriers, Destroyers, Submarines. Was an exciting career, retire in 2015. In 1999 Jan and I started self-building our third home in Pewaukee. Some good and some bad memories there. On my 55th birthday Janice had a surgery and diagnosed with a Neuro-Endocrine cancer tumor that had metastasized to her liver. She tried some drug trials and was told then she would have about 10 years to live. After I retired in 2015 Jan and I packed up everything and moved to Hawaii for a happy retirement not thinking about the cancer looming. We bought a home in Waikoloa on the Big Island and immediately began to renovate changing the layout. But the cancer won out, Jan repeatedly get weak and fall, and it was a week before her 65th birthday that she kept saying "don't forget to take me out to dinner in my birthday" but in the morning of June 27 I gave her a card 'Happy 65th Birthday sweetheart'. She replied with "it can't be" and 5 days later passed away. I was so hurt and alone there so I, with help from Chris, finished with all the renovating, gave away to Salvation Army, sold all my tools, and packed up only a few boxes of memories I had to keep and moved back to the midwest to start a new chapter in my life. Bought a home now in Byron MN, renovated the kitchen for an open concept, moved the basement stairs, put up new fencing, built a new deck and plan to keep myself busy to keep me from crying 'over and over, what more can I do'. Time now to get myself organized with a will and build a photo memory book, realizing that I'm now an old man and time has past by so quickly wondering where it went.
