Douglas's Story

Computer programmer for 36 years before retirement. I’ve never quit a job in my life. Lost 2 due to corporate merger and one due to product sunsetting with severe departmental layoffs. Married 1975 to Nancy Donley from Manheim Central High School, divorced 1996. Two children, girl Emily, boy Jeremy, both live locally. I met my second wife on the Internet, Li Hua. We were married in February 2014 in Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China. Foreigners who wish to marry Chinese nationals must do it in a provincial capital in a government registry office. At least in 2014, they did. I have a step son in China, Li Yingming. My wife’s ex husband disappeared in the 2008 great Sichuan earthquake. We went on a bus ride through the county capital of Beichuan near the epicenter of the quake. The entire town was destroyed. Very Chinese response, they evacuated all the living and turned the town into a museum. According to plaques, at the base of a beautiful mountain was a school. Well, after two million cubic meters of rock came down, there’s just a rocky plain. I stood there and tried to imagine it. I have visited china 4 times 36 weeks total. I hope to go again this fall to visit my wife’s family for 3 or 4 months. They live in Guangyuan, in Sichuan. My wife had an apartment in Mianyang when I met her. Her sister took it over when Hua came here. When we visit China, we split time between Mianyang and Guangyuan. We stay when not traveling with her sister Li SuHua or her mother, Wu Sanchen. Actually, cheap to go to China for us. Airfare is high but we have a place to stay and a table to eat at when we are not traveling. Last visit was November 2016 to mid February 2017. Chinese New Year Celebration is very cool to see. Been to Beijing twice, Guangzhou, Macao and Hong Kong. Visited Chonqing during the visit when I got married. One of the coolest things we did was take an evening river boat cruise in Chonqing. Went on a tour of the Three Gorges Dam that lasted an entire day. I think the tour started about 8:30 am and ended a little before 6. Everything you could want to see about it. Next visit, I hope to visit Juizhaigou Park or maybe Guangxi. So many cool places to see that I’d have to live there. Actually, Guangyuan was the site of the last battle between the Communists and the Nationalists. I believe Mianyang is the home of Chinese nuclear development. Mianyang is a famous tourist city but only for Chinese. My second visit, in 2014, for 8 weeks, I didn’t see a non Chinese face after leaving Chengdu airport until I came back to airport 8 weeks later. I’m the only male in my family who is not at least 6’ tall but nobody in Sichuan is taller than me. At least I haven’t seen them. China is known for short people and Sichuan is known for short Chinese. Funny how the world works. I grew up hating Communists, now I have Communist brothers and my wife was raised in a Communist house although she’s a Christian now. My wife’s father was a member of the People’s army in world war 2. He became disillusioned with Mao before he died but never left the party. He died in 1999 long before I met my wife. I really think I should have had my own reality show. I believe there was a show about couples who met on a fiance visa. I’ve got them beat. I married a woman two days after I met her. Whom I could not talk to. We communicated thru an English Chinese translator on her cell phone. She speaks a fair amount of English now, although little during my first two visits. Before I met her, we spent an estimated 500 hours watching each other and texting thru yahoo Messenger with a translation app. So it really wasn’t like we just met. Who knows, I suppose my story is different than most. 2018. At my advanced age, I’ve had to teach someone to drive. Yes, my wife Hua has a learners permit now. Since May, lost it for a month in July due to green card expiration before we were sen...Expand for more
t another extension. Since I hate cars with automatic transmission, she has to drive a car with a clutch. With any luck, they’ll continue to make cars with stick shifts till after I’m dead. When a non-citizen marries an American overseas and enters the USA married less than 3 years, one only gets a conditional visa. In July 17 2017I had to submit info proving we have a valid marriage, oh and pay $680. It wasn’t enough so they asked for more info. Not a problem but her green card expires Jan 2019. A permanent green card lasts 10 years. Since this isn’t stinking California, you actually have to show a valid green card to get a license in Pennsylvania. Go figure. Since late September, my wife is taking ESL English classes at RACC, 5 mornings a week. Since she has only a learners permit, guess what I do in the mornings. I’m happy to do everything I can for my wife, but it does bite into my time. Good that I’m retired. Since USCIS moves very slow, I’ll probably get another extension before they review the info and issue a permanent green card early in 2019. I wanted to visit China for 3 or 4 months but I can’t go until my wife’s green card is extended or made permanent. I need to make sure my wife can get back in the USA. I miss China. I can only stay up to 120 days. If I had a permanent visa, heck I’d be tempted to buy a home in China and spend much more time over there. I enjoy going over there to visit her family. In late January, my wife got her Congrats letter that she is now a permanent resident. Great, so we went to PENNDOT to extend her learners permit. Only took 3 VISITS. PENNDOT wouldn’t accept just the letter, so we went back after green card arrived. Not, even though we had letter and the green card, PENNDOT is connected to an Ins computer which said she was still temporary. I love Ins and PENNDOT. PENNDOT guy sent an inquiry to Harrisburg and we finally got letter that she’s a lawful permanent resident. So now she can drive again. And we can visit China without worry about getting her back in. Hoping to go for 3-4 months in late April or May. I miss China. 2019 May. My wife failed her driving test twice. Can’t parallel park. Oh well, June 4, we have another test. Her first year of ESL finished late April. I’m so stupid, I didn’t know about it. This could have been her third year, not her first. Haven’t been to China since Feb 2017. We postponed it for her class. RACC college has really helped her English. Haven’t booked tickets yet but we’ll probably leave sometime in Sept to Nov. stay 3 months. I’d be happy to see Chinese New Year again. If you can be in china over their New Year, go for it. I’ve been getting brochures from Viking cruise lines. I’d love to take a European river boat cruise. Maybe do that next year. In my life, I’ve only been to two countries. Canada twice and China 4 times. August 2020. Travelled to China January 8, scheduled to return March 17. 4 cancellations later due to covid, returned to USA August 2. A bit more China than I planned on. 450 miles from Wuhan. Lived thru China shutdown. China was wide open when I returned. Only problem with my trip is I didn’t get to travel. I wanted to take a trip to Guangxi or Xian or Juizhaigou. But covid shot that down. Hope to return to China in 2021. My mom, Wu Sanshen well my wife’s mom, is 84 and not in great health. I’d like to see her again. And I just like China. Overstayed my visa, had to go to immigration section of local police station to apply for an extension. China takes visas seriously, go figure. And since I have family and would like to visit every 2 years or so, I wish to stay on right side of the law. January 2024. Getting ready to visit China. Will be staying for 16 weeks. We plan to visit Heilongjiang while we are there. Today Jan 5, it was -10 degrees. But one of wife’s friends lives there. My wife is cold at 75, I wonder how cold she’ll be at -10.
