Doyle's Story

Life I was born in Canadian County,Oklahoma in 1943.My Father was a farmer and my Mother a homemaker. At the age of 6 years my family moved from the farm to town mainly because my Father could not take the dust anymore. He started building houses with a friend of his.I started school in 1950 at Webster Elementary.I only walked 3 blocks (not miles) to school. In 1954 my Father got a letter from my Uncle, who lived in San Antonio,Texas telling him about a new sub-divission getting ready to be built and there was going to be a lot of work available.Work in Oklahoma was very slow at the time,so my parents decided to move to San Antonio,Texas. We arrived in March of 1954.My Father started work the following day.My parents had rented out our house in Oklahoma completly furnished. They rented a house here furnished on Santa Anna Street and my Aunt and Uncle lived in the garage appartment behind. I remember, the population of San Antonio was abt 500,000. It was the largest place I had ever seen. There was a Handy Andy grocery store at the corner of Santa Anna and Fred. Rd. that was huge to me.It is now a bingo parlor and a lot of conveniece stores are bigger. We moved from Santa Anna to Hill Side Courts on Dewhurst. My Aunt and Uncle followed. This was abt 3 months after coming to San Antonio.I remember us living on the ground floor of the two story appartment, then when the second floor became vacant,we moved to the second floor. It was a lot bigger and not even there anymore. All the while my parents were saving up for a good down pay- ment on a home. After 3 more months of renting,we moved to the 500 block of LaManda off Blanco Rd. I started school in Sept. 1954 at a brand new school called Elma A.Neal Elementary, but it went through the 7th grade. My first job was putting literature on doors about Spud Nut donuts.I don't think I ever put any on a door though. Then I was told I could sell them, but I ate up my profit. The next job was a paper route which I kept for...Expand for more
6 years. After Elma A.Neal I went to Mark Twain for a year, but didn't like it.Most of my friends went to Edison.A girl I went to Neal with wanted to go to Twain because most of her friends went there. At that time you could trade,so we traded. That year the old Edison became Whittier Jr. High.I started in the ninth grade and must of realy liked it,because I stayed in it 2 years. When I was finally passed on I still had paper routes. After I started Edison High School I quit the paper routes. My third job was at a motorcycle shop and I had D.E. in school and worked half a day.In the second year of High School I really got smart.I figured why go to school all that time when I could work all day.The man that had the motorcycle shop was not making enough,so he took another job during the day.I worked there at night while I started my fourth job as a painter's helper. Then in 1963 I got a job at Business Aircraft as blueprint machine operator/draftsman.In 1964 an opening became available at Southwest Research in the fuels and lubricates Dept. In 1966 my seventh and final job came about when I went to work at Alterman Electric Company as an apprentice electrician.I went to school for four years and turned out as a journeyman electrician. I married in 1968 and divorced in 1969 then remarried in 1969.We will be married 38 years on 10/17/07.We have 3 children and 5 Grandchildren.I retired in 2003. I am still a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Workplace I started at Business Aircraft in 1963 as a blueprint machine operator/Draftsman.In 1964 I went to work at Southwest Research Institute in the fuels and lubricates division.I always wanted to be in the electrical trade,so in 1966 I started my apprenticeship at Nathan Alterman Electric Company. They were a union shop.In 1967 I was taken in to the union.I worked at many shops during my career and retired in Sept.2003.I am still a proud member of IBEW Local Union #60 in San Antonio,Texas
