Duane's Story
Life
I graduated from Arlington HS in 1966, and went to Dutchess Community Coll for 18 months, supposedly working on pre-engineering. I was more interested in rebuilding my '55 Ford, and grades slipped. So did my 2S draft deferral, and I beat the draft by enlisting in the USAF from 1968 - 1972. While in, I served for over 2 years at Yokota Air Base in Japan. While there, I started playing bluegrass banjo (I have played guitar since high school).
On returning home in 1972, I worked briefly at Lafayette Radio in Poughkeepsie until a representative from Fargo Mfg's engineering department came in to buy something, and practically offered me a job on the spot. I worked there until 1973 when IBM hired me as a technician on their high end mainframes. o say about things. I've been a committed Christian since then, except for a few years following my divorce - rough time when I questioned God and everything else.
I have a beautiful daughter, Katie, who lives in the Nashville area and is married to Paul Grassmann. Both of them are special people, and I've been very blessed that way.
I currently live in Austin, Texas, and have been here for 34 years. I'm very active in music, currently as lead singer and playing guitar and banjo in a bluegrass-gospel band. I toy with the radio still, especially now with one of the new "software defined radios" designed by Flex-Radio here in Austin. Being retired has allowee me time to get more involved in the music scene, and do some travelling. I served for, four years on the board of directors as treasurer of the Central Texas Bluegrass Association. These last few years I have managed to take a cruise (US river or coastal) each year which have provided some terrific photographic opportunities.
