Duane's Story

Life Okay, we’ve made it to 40. How are things going? Are you where you thought you’d be? Would you go back and change anything? My answers are… Great, No, Yes. I’ll start in the middle. In my case, I knew of specific things or situations I wanted, but it’s a moving target. So I kinda and kinda didn’t know where I’d be at this stage in my life. I have for years enjoyed where I am, while working toward something better. Most of those better things lately, have been me, making myself a better person. I’ve given up on a lot of pretentiousness. I am willing to be myself and that’s okay. I continually approach who I feel I should be. I have a real love for family, friends, and everyone in general, and I’m not on anti-depressants, not that there’s anything wrong with that. When I say that things are going great, I am saying that I am blessed way beyond my needs in a number of ways. I’m not the healthiest I’ve ever been, I am not relatively the wealthiest I have ever been, but I am definitely the happiest I’ve ever been. What the heck, I’ll tell you why. Back in 1978, in a YoungLife meeting, I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior. That could be a shock to anyone who ever knew me, because I always reserved a portion of myself. There were thoughts, language, and other areas I just wouldn’t bring under subject of God’s will. Slowly, with baby steps, I have given those areas up. It is still a daily issue. Don’t think for a second I think I am “Good”, or better than anyone. I’m not. I just try and keep me under check and let God do the steering. It’s a hundred decisions a day. I still make some good ones, and some bad ones. What I don’t do today is make excuses or rationalizations for getting out of step. And that brings me to my last question. Would I go back...Expand for more
and change anything? Yes, but it’s not that simple. Every good thing, every bad thing I have experienced, every single one of those has shaped me to who I am today. I would not take back any bad thing that has happened to me. What I would do, is go back and take back any pain I caused others. You know in some ways, you do get to go back and not make the same mistakes. Every day is new. Every second we get the chance to make the right decisions. To specifically bore you if you have read this far. I have a wonderful wife, two kids – that help me grow, three dogs and three cats. I have a nice house on two acres. Whenever I get a chance, I have a bonfire. I’ve been a pyro since cub scouts. I’ve had a 4th of July party where the fire department was called after launching a 60ft fireball into the air. Now that’s a good party! I took up snowboarding at 35 years old. I thought if you are going to break a leg, do it doing something cool. So I broke my leg the second year boarding, and looked absolutely stupid doing it. But to my credit, I finished the run, down a black with the broken leg. Now I am pretty good. We go on a couple of ski trips a year, and at least one beach trip a year. I recommend skiing at Wolf Creek, stay in Pagosa Springs. Check out horncreek dot org for a neat family camp in Colorado. If you haven’t seen the Texas hill country in spring, don’t wait. Gruene Texas – good eating and dancing. If you don’t know how to dance yet, learn. I’m not any good either. Texas and Arkansas rivers are waiting for you to take a trip down them. We love Arkansas. My brother lived there for six years. Check out Queen Willamena, Eureka Springs, Hot Springs, and if you are ever in Fayetteville, get the “Chicken-over-the-Coals” at AQ chicken. See y’all at the next reunion.
