Duane's Story

My college work was done at the University of Washington. After receiving my Ph.D. in Geography in 1959, I accepted a position with the School of Business at the University of Oregon. Shortly thereafter I accepted s new appointment on the faculty of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. During the remainder of my career I served as Professor of Geography at Northwestern University; Professor of Geography and Computer Science at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University. in Sweden, Chile and Thailand for short periods of time. My professional work focused on computational geography and geographic information systems (GIS) as well as on transportation geography. In 1993 I received an Honors award from the Association of American Geographers for "seminal work in quantitative techniques, transportation geography, computer modeling and simulation, and for pioneering research in geographic information systems". In 1997 I received the ESRI Legend in Leadership award presented for life time work in geographic information systems.
