Duane's Story

Life High School was definately, at best, a social event. I wasn't one to go on to college, at least not soon after graduation. Instead I thought I'd be a professional bowler, however, I figured the "Draft" would catch up to me anyway so I joined the U.S. Army. My travels included "Special" (Barf) places like Camp Polk, LA, and Ft. Gordon, GA. Along the way I ended up in Germany only to end up frustrating the base commander who had me sent to Vietnam because I refused to go to West Point via his suggestion. Nam was an interesting place, though my visit was shortened when ole' "Charlie" put a bullet in me. That sent me off to Japan for a visit, then to Letterman Hospital when good "Uncle Sam" finally broke hold of the twisted arm he held behind my back and "Retired" me forever. Oh, seven days before leaving the Nam I married my childhood sweetheart, and nine months later Duane Jr. was on our doorstep. All you taxpayers out there paid for his hospital delivery, we (Linda Perry) and I paid $25. Being retired at the ripe old age of twenty-one was a trip...still, I needed to work so I went into business with the father-in-law. Ten years later, another son, Rob, and many less hairs on my head I opened my own insurance agency (Farmers Insurance) where I stayed for twenty plus years. Oh, a second marriage took place in 1994 but currently divorced as of January 2008. Around 1998 or so, the after effects of too many combat night ...Expand for more
ambush patrols took its toll, I had several health problems, though they never declared me officially nuts I often felt that way as the nightmares were non-stop as were the sleepless nights. This time the Veterans Administration declared me officially retired, again, and I haven't worked since, at least no work that pays any money. Luckily, my children blessed me with some beautiful grandchildren and now I guess you can call me an official babysitter, which I absolutely love. So, several times a week I take care of the kids, it's kinda like being a househusband! When the kids are sick of me I write, believe it or not, the one person who still doesn't know the difference between a verb and an adverb is a published author, ME. Several of my true short stories are in the Chicken Soup for the Soul books as well a other books by individual authors and other reading material. Currently I am in process of writing my autobiography of my pre-war experience of being a high school senior knowing I'd be drafted, the actaul war as an infantry sergeant and post war, how the experience and trauma affected my entire soul. It should be interesting reading if I ever finish the dang thing. I've remained in Sonoma County my entire life, other than the military and one other period of four years where I moved to Santa Cruz, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone, that is unless I didn't like them! So there you have it...short, sort of, and sweet!
