Earlene's Story

Life I've been married to Don Hazelrigg (Truman '84) since May '86. We finally had a child, a little boy, after years of thinking we'd never be able to have children of our own. Brett was born in March 2000 & he's changed our lives, for the better. He's just awesome & he's so much fun! =) I can't believe he'll be starting 3rd grade this fall. Brett is really into baseball now. This will be his 4th summer on a team & he loves it! He's starting to get pretty good, too. I know he would sleep in his uniform, hat and cleats if I would let him. His favorite thing in the winter is hockey, thanks to our friend Tim; and he loves MU and hates KU right along with us! Go Tigers! Don, is Chief Maintenance Engineer for Hilton Garden Inn in Independence. His schedule there is very flexible & it's great that he can plan his schedule around mine when I need him to. Brett and I do love that! Me, I'm a Charge Nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU - on 9North) at North Kansas City Hospital, 3 days/week! =) I also enjoy selling Mary Kay Cosmetics on the side, too. I had quite a scare the end of last summer. I've had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - which is basically hypothyroidism - for several years and then a pretty big thyroid goiter was found in Feb 2004. Last summer I ended up having the goiter biopsied because several new nodules showed up on a routine annual ultrasound; a biopsy of a few of the nodules came back showing characteristics of malignancy. That scared me good, so I decided to have the whole thyroid just taken out to prevent any further suspicious biopsies in the future. Final pathology came back benign!! :) What a relief! I see the endocrinologist every 3 months, have lab work...Expand for more
drawn, and she is still increasing my dose of Synthroid until my levels even out, so eventually I should start to feel better. Other than fighting with my weight, being cold all the time, and feeling tired & run down in general (which is how I've felt for at least the last 10-15 years), and now having to take Synthroid every day for the rest of my life, I'm doing pretty well. I do have days now when I feel really good, but I can still get run down easily if I'm not careful! I still hang out with some of the crazier folks from my youth: Janet Koehler, Melissa (McCready) Smith, Tim Comer (my very best buddy from Truman, besides Don!), Judy (McClesky) Decker, Debbie (Koehler) Boyd, Roxanne (Proell) Sowter, and I work with Dana (Kremsreiter) McCroskie at NKCH. We go to lots of concerts; mostly the 80's retro we all know & love! Especially Rick Springfield, Loverboy, Patty Smyth (Scandal), Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Poison, Sammy Hagar... We love hockey and miss the Blades/Outlaws. We do get to St. Louis to see the Blues several times a year; at least until the NHL finally comes to KC. We love going to several Mizzou men's basketball games each season & have season tickets for Mizzou football. We also see lots of Royals games each summer. Brett loves the sporting events and he fits right in with all the screaming that goes on. He is so funny! Occasionally, you'll even find us at places like Funkytown, if we're feeling a little crazy! You'd think I would decide to grow up sometime, huh ~ but I'm having way too much fun & I don't feel like getting 'old' just yet! I guess I can safely say for now that: "Life Is Great!" I'd love to hear from anyone of you! Don't be afraid to give me a holler!!!
