Ebony's Story

Life After I graduated from Capital High School in 1994; I immediately went off to college at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, I had to drop out after 3 months of college. I am a proud mother of an 12 year old boy who was the reason that I dropped out of AIP. Fortunately, I got back in school within a couple of years of dropping out. I attended WVSC now WVSU and I made things happen. I graduated with my BA in Art in 2000 and I re-entered WVSU and graduated again with my second BA in Psychology in 2003. During the early part of 2003 I was nominated into the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and I am now a member of that organization. In 2000 I met a wonderful young man that I eventually got engaged to and married in 2005. That same year in 2005 he graduated from WVSU and we packed up our belongings to move to the "Windy City" (Chicago). I have been here for almost two years now and it is nothing like Charleston, WV. I can honestly say that I do miss the friendly faces of Charleston. Living in the city compared to a smaller place people are always too busy, always rushing and just can't stop and chill. It is a beautiful place and words can't describe all of the things you can do (especially the Taste of Chicago). I would have stayed in WV if I could make big money like our fellow city people. Many of you most likely have left WV in search of a better life, more money and to get away. Update: I am into helping our children get a better education. I am a certified substitute teacher until I complete my education courses here in Illinois. It is a very nice profession to be in and it is most definitely rewarding. It is fun being with the kids and teaching them about the fundamentals of learning. I do not sub for just one particular school or grade. I want to be able to experience it all and to get to know all students K-12. I never had the chance to sub in WV, but I am sure that it is a different feel and a different educational system. I know for a fact that I am going to make a difference with the children; it should be a goal for all teachers to be able to make a difference in a child's life. College My college life was quite different than I expected. I attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in July 1994 to late September 1994. It was an amazing experience too. At the AIP there were no dorm rooms, but I did have two other roommates. I hardly knew them, but since we didn't have anything in common, I met some other females and moved out into a townhome with them for the remainder of my time being in Pittsburgh. Did we have fun or what? We worked extremely hard during those days and believe it or not I rarely partied while going to school there. When I did party, we were the ones throwing the actual parties at our spot on Avery Street on the Northside of Pittsburgh. We had a DJ with the turntables scratching and of course who could ever forget the microphone. I did meet some wonderful people back then, but I have no clue where they are now, I met Ed, Michelle, Taneya, and a host of others; I am so curious as to where they are now. We had the cops come and break up some of our parties because we were always blasting our music, other than that our place was very quiet when we were not partying. The last time that I stepped foot in Pittsburgh was back in 2000 and I have not been there ...Expand for more
since. I plan to visit again because I do have friends and family there. I can remember having one class from 7:30am to 12:30pm and it was too much. I always walked across the 4th and 5th Street bridges in order to get to class on time. I passed by the Andy Warhol Museum every single day because I lived almost down the street from it. If you have never been to Pittsburgh check it out, check out the Encline on Mount Washington, it is like an elevator looking thing that takes you up and down the side of Mount Washington, it is cool. If you have never went to the University of Pitt, check that campus out, it is extremely nice too. One spot that you can't miss and it is in Oakland, it's called "The O" also known as the "Original", they have really good cheese fries, hotdogs and pizza, that was one of my spots. You should also check out Carnegie Melon's Museum, it is so nice too. I also went to some smaller places on the outskirts of Pittsburgh called Alaquippa (if I spelled that right). It is a small little city and it is mainly kind of like being on a hill. My life when I left Pittsburgh was different, I attended West Virginia State University, it is a nice school with a beautiful campus, but I did not party that much while attending school there either. I remember the parties near the gym called the Dust to Dawn, I remember the parties in the Firehouse on campus. I remember the parties in our college Union, I liked those a lot better due to the room. I met my husband while attending college and it was a cool experience too. I do remember staying up late and typing out research papers, preparing speeches and essays, it was not fun. I did not like doing oral reports in front of my classes or preparing for critiques, but I believed that I could do it and I always made good grades. All I can say is that my college life was really nice and interesting, I thank God for not being caught up in the dating scene or always being known for partying. I was always one of those females that stayed sober, I did not waste time getting intoxicated because to me it was never necessary. Let me get on dealing with what to eat!!!! Back in WV they were lucky to have a cafeteria, but when I was in school at Pittsburgh, we had our own refridgerator, so we had to purchase our own food, do the grocery shopping and everything. I wished that I did not have to grocery shop while attending school out of state, but that was the life at that particular school. Overall, I am satisfied with my college life at both schools and I really enjoyed meeting different people. The hardest thing was meeting people that would never return after their very first semester at the school. Yes, so many students were burnt out before they actually began. Workplace I used to work during the summer in the summer programs back in Charleston, WV. When I got a little older, I began working in the fast food restaurants like most teenagers. After graduation I left to Pittsburgh, PA and I did not work. My first 2 years of college at WVSU, I was working for a bakery making donuts, working in retail, working as a hostess at a nice restaurant and my last retail job before I took on my new career was working for a major retail office supply super center. I am now into the teaching profession in the state of Illinois. It is a big difference and I enjoy everything that I do to help our children.
