More about Ed:"Christmas 2013
Greetings from the Bakers. We wish you and your family a very merry Christmas. We look back over this past year with a lot of joy and gratitude. Our daughter, Amy, who had lived with us for two years while we helped her deal with her Lupus, bought a home about four miles from us this past spring. A small house with a big yard is what she wanted, and she found one that fit the bill. We were able to visit our son, Dan, and his family near Dearborn, MI, in July and November. Though he travels a lot (Australia, Sweden, and China were the farthest trips this year), he enjoys his job for a steel co. Their daughters turned 8 and 2 this year. They are both delightful little girls, and I didn’t even mind the younger calling me “Grandma” when we were there last summer.
In September, I cut back to 1/3 time at Orchard Hill and will retire from the church this coming September. They had a wonderful celebration of our ministry there (32 years) in November. It was an evening filled with wonderful memories, many laughs, and great worship. It has been a wonderful congregation in which to be a pastor. The toughest change was vacating my office and having an office at home instead. I think Sally is adjusting well to having me around more, but I miss having a place to “hang out” at church. We’ve been working with the young adult group at church; Sally does a lot of adult teaching and working with our Sunday morning children’s program. I’m still a part of our worship service teaching team, and lead a couple other Bible studies each week.
Periodic cortisone shots in Sally’s knees keep her mobile for now. I had cataract surgery this month. Other than that, we are doing well physically. I played a lot of ...Expand for more
tennis this summer and try to get on the racquetball court regularly.
So we feel very blessed and thankful. We look forward to what these next years will hold, confident that God is not through with us yet. We’re grateful for your friendship and pray that 2014 may be a blessed year for you as well.

CHRISTMAS 2019
As Sally and I turned 75 this year, we realized again how blessed we are with good health, good friends, and good memories. Sally has had a busy year, leading Bible studies for our Sr. Citizen group almost continuously. They love her knowledge and teaching. She continues to provide much care and support for her 94 year old step-mother, Verna, who is now in skilled nursing at our local retirement community, the Western Home. Speaking of which, Sally and I have purchased a Villa there and will be moving next summer. As it is being built, we are able to select finishes to suit our tastes. Now we are trying to get our home of 26 years ready to sell, and to downsize to a smaller home. It’s a healthy, frustrating, and interesting process. We will be moving only about one mile, but it feels like a major journey.
Our daughter, Amy, who lives just a few miles from us, does a great job handling the challenges that come with her Lupus and Crohns. She is motivated by her caring for dogs and cats through local rescue agencies. We are enjoying our adult friendship with her.
Dan and Stacy live near Detroit, where Dan is a metallurgist with GM. He enjoys the challenges of his job and doesn’t have to travel too much. Their daughters, ages 13, 8, and 3, keep them busy.
I am able to preach almost every Sunday, either at one of Orchard Hill’s campuses or at other local churches. I have developed a wonderful relationship with some young men on our staff. From my viewpoint it is more friendship than mentoring. I played a lot of tennis this summer with some young guys who have strong gifts of mercy and get in some racquetball every week all year.
Once again we reflect on how gracious the Lord has been to us in our 52 years of marriage. We look forward with trust and anticipation to the next steps in our journey of faith.
