Ed's Story

Life Since college, I have been in the landscape field the whole time, met my wife 14 years ago through a personal ad, and have had the great opportunity to travel to some great places. I took the advice of a friend, and put out an ad in the Columbia Flier. What turned out was, that the paper also put my ad in all the other community papers as well. I got calls from Hagerstown, Frederick and Towson. I met some really nice girls who were mostly new to the area. I picked the girl from Towson. I really wanted the girl next door in Columbia, but that was not to be. We met, fell in love, and have been happy ever since. We live in White Marsh, about 15 minutes Northeast of Baltimore. College College was the best learning experience in life. It matures you, you learn valuable lessons, you are taught prioritizing, you are taught trials and errors. In my case, I got off to a rough road at Maryland. I did not initially study as much as I needed to. I got caught in the dorm and frat social scene and friends and girls always came before school. The later years were better when I finally focused, knew what a priority was, and got the gpa up to where it needed to be. I would have never done anything differently. I am to this day very close to just about everyone in my dorm on the 4th floor of Cambridge D. Go Terps!! I'm now on the recruiting team to get Lands...Expand for more
cape Management students to go to Chapel Valley. I'm very active in the Department of Natural Resorces, and participate at the Agriculture booth at Maryland day in late April. I'm also an active member of the Terrapin Club, and have season tickets to both football and basketball. The Comcast Center is awesome!!! Workplace Ever since high school I always envisioned myself as a horticulturist, or someone in the forestry realm. I'm very lucky to have worked in the field that I really wanted to pursue after high school. I started in the trenches at Creative Plantings, learned manager and supervisory roles, as well as sales at Ruppert Landscape in which I was employed for 10 years. I feel I was a big part of growing that company of 2 million in revenue when I started, to the 45 million it had achieved when I left. After meeting a friend and fellow dorm mate at a Landscape Contractor Association meeting, I was encouraged to work with him at Chapel Valley Landscape Company and help as an account manager to help develop and grow his branch. I'm now in year #7 there, and have helped grow Chapel Valley to 3 times the size in revenue and size. Helping out in sales, watching my team grow, and having significant interaction with my clients makes my job enjoyable. We can all thank Mr. Yelen in Horticulture at Einstein, because he got me rolling on my career path.
