Edna's Story

Life My friends called me "Carm" & my maiden name was pronouced BAY-KNEE. I've been married for 42 years, lived in NC for 39 years, and moved to Texas in 2010. I have a 38 year old son in the Coast Guard, & 3 grand children, 19, 14 , and 11 yrs. I owned & ran my own commercial fishing business/marina for 14 years. 15 yrs ago I went back to work for the City of Elizabeth City & retired 5 years ago. Reunions here are a "couples" thing and last for a weekend. Wish we could do something like that. A few hour reunion is too short for the expense involved. School Needless to say, my biggest crush wasn't a fellow student, but a neighbor. thought it might go somewhere, but found something much better a few years on. Been Married to Archie for 39 years now. Mr. Kirsch probably inspired me more than anyone. He made you think for yourself, no matter what the subject or issue. After all that has happened in the world since Eastern, if I could live over the day President Kennedy was assassinated, I'd believe that it had happened instead of making smart remarks I later regretted. As for my funniest/craziest memory, I will never forget the day I tried to tell Mr. Beechner that the car battery wasn't hooked up right and he wouldn't listen. When he threw the switch, it threw him against the wall. That was the hardest straight face I ever had to keep! Eastern with her traditions will never be replaced....those who do not have them are missing out on something that nothing else in school life will ever replace. That's one woman's opinion. College Having worked in the Counselors' office every lunch hour, study hall and gym class during senior year (I was a physical liability and they didn't want me in pe), Mrs. Jackson really had an influence on me. When I graduated I went to the same business college she had. Strayer was quite famous along the east coast, but I didn't know that until I was married and moved away. I came to Elizabeth City, NC, a town of about 10,000 at the time to find 4 well known, established business professionals who had graduated from Strayer in the years before. Since Strayer was a small school, it was quite a boost to my ego. I have been very thankful for the training I received there, including the opportunity to know syndicated columnist F. D. Fleming who inspired me to want to be one too. I now write "View from the Right," for the Alvin Sun in Alvin, TX. Workplace Graduation from Strayer meant "get to work" and so I did. W. H. Bryan & Company, a food brokerage on North Charles Street, gave me my first taste of what it was to be a secretary rather than a stenographer. (Stenographers took dictation; secretaries took crap!) The only ...Expand for more
secretary for 4 partners and a squad of salesmen, Bryan & Company was a challenge for a newly graduated 19 yr. old. But, I enjoyed working there for nearly 5 years. I left the week before my wedding. Once married, my husband and I relocated to North Carolina where in January of 1972 I took a job as secretary to the owner of the Island Gallery & Christmas Shop, a real tourist attraction in Manteo, NC. I worked there as 3rd in command under the founder and his partner until December of 1972 when the opportunity arose to go to work for the Park Service at Capt Hatteras National Seashore command offices in Manteo. I remained with the Park Service until November of 1973 when I transferred to USCG Aircraft Repair and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, NC. I remained with AR&SC until September of 1975 when I resigned to stay home with then 6 month old Terence Christian. In December of 1977, after reaching the state of pulling out my hair because nearly 3 year old T.C. had to be with me every waking moment which meant I couldn't go to the bathroom without him, I decided it was time to put this kid in day care where he would learn there were other people in the world besides Mommie! I went to work with the City of Elizabeth City as Secretary to the Planning Department. I stayed with the Planning Department for 13 years during which I worked with 9 different Planning Directors and did a year long "tour of duty" without anyone running the place but me! In 1991 I transferred to Administration as the Administrative Assistant to the City Manager. I remained there until Dec. 31, 1992 when I resigned to stay home and take care of my elderly mother. Mom lived with us nearly 5 years, and when she passed away, I let the powers that be at the city know I was ready to go back to work. I left the office at ll:30 that morning and at 9 pm that night the Human Resources director called and asked if I could be at work at 8 the next morning. "Just 2 questions," I said. "How much and where do I park?" That was July 17th, 1997. I went back in planning as Planning Technician, transferred to Administrative Assistant to the Director in a few months, and remained there until July, 2000, when I became Assistant to the Risk Manager. When she retired, I was promoted to Safety Liability Analyst and remained there until retirement. Retired 2/25/1998 and have LOVED every minute of being home and doing "stuff" with my darling hubby, Archie! Now that we are living in Texas, I love the grapefruit and pecans in my own back yard as well as the veggies from our own little garden. My whole family is together at Greater Harvest Community Church every Sunday, which is a dream come true for me.
